Description
Zostavax vaccine is a live attenuated vaccine used to prevent chickenpox (varicella) in individuals aged 12 months and older. It contains a weakened form of the varicella-zoster virus, which helps the immune system recognize and build protection against the actual virus without causing the disease. This vaccine does not treat an active chickenpox infection but is used to prevent future infections. It is administered by a healthcare professional and should never be self-administered.
The vaccine works by stimulating the body's immune response to produce antibodies against the varicella virus. These antibodies remain in the system and help prevent infection if the person is exposed to the virus later in life. It is essential to follow any post-vaccination care instructions provided by the healthcare provider. In the event of a missed dose, or if unusual symptoms occur, the doctor should be contacted immediately. Since the vaccine is administered in a clinical setting, overdose is unlikely.
Before receiving Zostavax vaccine, it is important to inform the doctor about any existing medical conditions, such as kidney or liver disease, or a history of organ transplantation. Salicylates, such as aspirin, should not be taken for six weeks following vaccination due to a potential association with Reye syndrome. Individuals who are in close contact with people who are immunocompromised, pregnant without a history of chickenpox, or newborns born before 28 weeks gestation should also take precautions. If a rash develops after vaccination, medical advice should be sought promptly.
Common side effects include mild fever, rash, irritability, and redness or pain at the injection site. These reactions are generally mild and resolve on their own. However, if symptoms persist or worsen, a healthcare provider should be consulted. The vaccine should be stored at a temperature between 2°C to 8°C and protected from light. It must be kept out of the reach of children and properly disposed of by healthcare professionals.

Contraindications of Zostavax 0.65 ML
- If you have an allergy to any varicella vaccine, any of the excipients of Zostavax vaccine, or neomycin (which may be present as a trace residue).
- If you have blood dyscrasias, leukaemia, lymphomas of any type, or other malignant neoplasms affecting the hemic and lymphatic systems.
- If you are receiving immunosuppressive therapy (including high doses of corticosteroids).
- If you have severe humoral or cellular (primary or acquired) immunodeficiency, such as severe combined immunodeficiency, agammaglobulinaemia, AIDS, or symptomatic HIV infection, or specific low age-related CD4+ T-lymphocyte percentages in children....
- If you have a family history of congenital or hereditary immunodeficiency, unless your immune competence has been demonstrated.
- If you have active untreated tuberculosis.
- If you have any illness with a fever greater than 38.5°c. If you are pregnant. Pregnancy should be avoided for one month following vaccination.

- You have a family history of congenital or hereditary immunodeficiency.
- You are HIV-infected or suspect you may be.
- You are in close contact with individuals who are immunocompromised, pregnant (without varicella history), or newborns born before 28 weeks of gestation.
- You are currently taking or have recently received immune globulins or other blood products.
- You plan to take or are currently taking salicylates (like aspirin) or products containing salicylates.
- You have kidney disease or have had a kidney transplant.
- You have liver disease or any ongoing liver-related condition.
- You or someone close to you develops a rash after vaccination.
- You are pregnant or planning to become pregnant.
- You are caring for or living with individuals who are at high risk of complications from varicella infection.
- You have any known immune system problems or are taking medications that suppress the immune system.

- Zostavax vaccine will be given by a doctor or nurse.
- Do not self-inject, follow any aftercare instructions given by the doctor/nurse.

How Does It Work?
Interactions of Zostavax 0.65 ML
Interactions with other medicines
- Do not take aspirin or salicylates for 6 weeks after receiving the vaccine, as this helps prevent the risk of Reye's syndrome.
- Inform your doctor if you have recently received immune globulins or blood products, as these may reduce the vaccine's effectiveness.
- If you need a TB (PPD) skin test, schedule it before, on the same day, or 4 weeks after the Zostavax vaccine to avoid false test results.
- Zostavax vaccine can be administered with other live vaccines. If not given together, wait 1 month after a measles-containing vaccine before receiving Zostavax vaccine. For spacing between chickenpox vaccines: Children (12 years and under) should wait at least 3 months between doses, while teens and adults can receive the second dose 1 month after the first....
- You can take Zostavax vaccine at the same time as M-M-R II (Measles, Mumps, Rubella), Hib vaccine (Haemophilus influenzae type b), and Hepatitis B (recombinant) vaccine.
- Discuss with your doctor any other medicine, herbal preparation and supplements you are taking currently to avoid any possible drug interactions.
