Uses
- Management of symptoms of obsessive-compulsive disorder.
- Management of symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder.
- Treatment of premenstrual dysphoric disorder.
- Management of symptoms of social anxiety disorder.
- Treatment of anxiety.
- Treatment of depression.
- Treatment of panic.
Contraindications
- If you are allergic to Sertraline or any other active ingredient present in the medication.
- If you are on medications that belong to the monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOI) class.
- If your course of MAOI has just been completed. At least 14 days gap is required.
Side effects

Other General Warnings
- You feel pressure in the eyes. Glaucoma patients should be monitored while taking Sertima. Patients with glaucoma have an increased risk of developing adverse side effects.
- You have suicidal thoughts. Sertima should be used with extreme caution in patients at risk of developing suicidal thoughts as it increases the risk of changes in behaviour and suicidal thoughts. Any unusual symptoms or changes in behaviour should be reported to the doctor immediately.
- You have low sodium levels. Sertima can cause sodium levels to drop in people. The risk of developing hyponatremia is increased in the elderly population and people who are taking water pills or diuretics. Your physician may monitor your sodium levels during the time you are getting treated with Sertima.
- You have a history of seizure disorders. Sertima should be used with extreme caution in patients who have a history of seizure disorders, as it can increase the risk of recurrent seizures. This medicine should be immediately stopped if you develop seizures or notice an increase in the frequency of seizures.
- You want to stop the medication.
- In case a patient decides to stop the medication between the course without their doctor’s advice, they can experience adverse side effects. The risk of experiencing the same is increased in patients who have used the medication for a long time. Doctors recommend tapering the dosage of Sertima over time to avoid the risk of developing any side effects. Do not stop taking Sertima without talking to your health care provider before.
- You have impaired liver function. Sertima is metabolised in the liver. If you have impaired liver function, your system may not be able to break down the medication effectively. This can lead to an increase in the levels of Sertima in the body. The medication should be used with caution in patients with liver problems.
- Sertima is not recommended below the age of six years.
Directions for Use
- Take Sertima according to the directions given to you by your doctor.
- The efficacy of Sertima reduces if a tablet is broken down or chewed. Take the tablet as a whole.
- You can take Sertima before or after eating food.
- You can swallow Sertima as a whole with a glass of water.
- Please ensure that you take Sertima at the same time every day. This should be done so that the system has the same level of the medication in the blood.
- Do not take Sertima for more time than what is recommended by the doctor.
- Do not stop taking Sertima without consulting your doctor.

Interactions with other medicines
- Ondansetron (prevents nausea and vomiting)- Increases risk of adverse effects.
- Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory meds such as Ibuprofen, Diclofenac, high dose aspirin (medications used to treat pain, inflammation and reduce high temperature)- Increase the risk of bleeding.
- Patients should exercise caution if they take the monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOI) class. These medications are used to treat depression. Patients can experience increased side effects and life-threatening situations if they take MAOIs and Sertima together.
Interactions with food items
- Food doesn’t influence the effect of Sertima. Before using Sertima, talk to your health provider about any supplements or herbal drinks you are currently taking.
