Pregnancy

If you have had contact with the virus or are at a high risk of getting it, the Rabivax vaccine can be given during pregnancy. Other General Warnings

Talk to your doctor if
  • You or your child are seriously allergic to egg or egg products
  • You or your child are allergic to neomycin, chlortetracycline, amphotericin B, polygeline or other contents of this vaccine
  • You or your child have fainted before or after receiving an injection previously
  • You or your child have taken or plan to take any other medicines, even those that a doctor has not prescribed
  • You have a disease that needs medication
  • You are at a high risk of contracting an infection

Directions for Use

  • Do not inject the vaccine yourself
  • A skilled nurse or doctor will administer the vaccine to you or your kid in a clinic that is well-equipped to handle any allergic reactions that may occur
  • Any aftercare instructions given by the doctor or nurse should be followed
  • Your doctor will decide whether you need booster doses or not based on the risk of contact with the rabies virus

Storage and disposal

Store the vaccine in the outer carton in a refrigerator at temperatures 2°C - 8°C. Do not put it in the freezer. Protect the vaccine from light, and store it in a dark place. Use the vaccine as soon as it has been reconstituted. Keep out of children's reach. Do not use the vaccine past its expiration date mentioned on the outer carton. Do not dispose of any vaccines in the wastewater. Instead, ask your pharmacist for proper methods of disposal.

Dosage

Overdose

There is no chance of overdose since a skilled doctor or nurse will administer the vaccine. Nevertheless, to date, no symptoms of overdose are known. However, consult your doctor in case of extreme discomfort or when in doubt.

Missed a Dose

If you miss an appointment with the doctor for the injection, you should schedule one as soon as possible after the due date.

Mode of Action

How Does It Work?

Rabivax contains rabies antigen that has been grown using the Pitman Moore strain of the virus. It increases the formation of two types of white blood cells in the body: lymphocytes and plasmocytes. Rabies virus neutralising antibodies (RVNAs) are produced in the body as a result of this. The antibodies can defend against the rabies virus. This is referred to as "active immunisation."

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

  • Immunosuppressive agents may prevent an adequate response to the rabies vaccine from developing. Hence, it is recommended that serological responses in such people be monitored, and supplementary doses are given as needed
  • Rabivax can be given with other inactivated vaccines. A different injection site is used for each vaccine
  • Rabivax can be given along with rabies immunoglobulin. However, it must be injected at a different site away from the vaccination site
  • Do not mix the vaccine with other medicines in the same syringe

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

No, you will not get rabies if you take the Rabivax vaccine. The vaccine does not contain a live virus and does not cause infection in the body. It only stimulates the production of antibodies, which then help protect from virus attacks in the future.

There are some side effects associated with the use of this vaccine. Hence, it is normal to not feel well after taking this vaccine. However, you must talk to your doctor if you observe any unusual symptoms or you continue to feel unwell for longer periods.

Rabivax, like all vaccines, may not provide complete protection to everyone who gets it. You may require more doses if you come into contact with a potentially contaminated animal following vaccination. If this occurs, you should immediately consult your doctor. In some situations, the doctor may also elect to inject you with anti-rabies antibodies.

If the animal has been properly vaccinated, you may not need to take the vaccine. However, it is best to consult a doctor first. In some cases, an individual may need it (if unvaccinated previously) or might need booster doses (if vaccinated previously).
