Medical Description
Lamistar tablet is a combination medicine used to treat HIV-1 infection in patients aged 12 years and older who weigh at least 60 kg. It works by reducing the amount of virus in your body and supporting your immune system's ability to fight infections. Lamivudine and stavudine, the two active ingredients, stop the virus from multiplying by interfering with its ability to copy its genetic material. This helps reduce the virus level in your body and slows down the progression of HIV.
Like all medications, Lamistar tablet may cause side effects. Some common ones include headache, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, rash, and stomach discomfort. You may also feel very weak, tired, or short of breath, and in some cases, weakness in the arms or legs can occur. If any of these symptoms become severe or unusual, it’s important to contact your doctor. Serious side effects like liver problems or pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas) are rare but can happen, especially when used with other medications like didanosine.
You should take this medicine exactly as your doctor prescribes. Swallow the tablet whole with water, preferably at the same time each day and on an empty stomach. Don’t take more than the prescribed dose. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time for the next dose. Never take two doses at once. In case of overdose, seek medical help immediately.
Let your doctor know about all other medications you are taking, as Lamistar tablet can interact with certain drugs. Avoid using it with zidovudine, zalcitabine, or be cautious if you are also on doxorubicin, ribavirin, or kidney-cleared medicines like trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole. Alcohol should be avoided as it can increase the risk of liver and pancreas damage. Also, this medicine should be used in pregnancy only if your doctor advises it, and breastfeeding is not recommended due to the risk of passing HIV to your baby.
Always store the tablets in a cool, dry place, away from heat, sunlight, and children. Keep in touch with your doctor for regular check-ups and lab tests. If you have liver issues, are co-infected with hepatitis B, or are taking this medicine with others like didanosine, let your doctor know as there may be added risks. This medicine helps manage HIV but is not a cure, so it is important to take it consistently and follow your treatment plan closely.

Mode of Action
How Does It Work?
- Lamivudine is a medication that helps treat HIV and hepatitis B by stopping the viruses from multiplying in your body. It works by mimicking a natural part of the virus’s genetic material. When the virus attempts to replicate itself, lamivudine interferes with the process, blocking it so the virus can’t produce new copies properly. This helps lower the amount of virus in your body and supports your immune system.
- Stavudine is a medicine used to help treat HIV by lowering the amount of virus in your body. It works by interfering with the virus’s ability to copy itself. Stavudine resembles a natural part of the virus’s genetic code, and when the virus attempts to utilise it for multiplication, the process is blocked. This helps slow down the spread of the virus, giving your immune system a better chance to stay strong and fight infections.
Interactions
Interactions with other medicines
- Avoid taking Lamistar tablet together with zidovudine, as they can interfere with each other’s action inside the body and reduce their effectiveness.
- Be cautious if you are taking doxorubicin or ribavirin with this medicine, as they may interact with its effects.
- If you are taking Lamistar tablet, please inform your doctor about all other medications you are using, especially those that are cleared by the kidneys, such as trimethoprim (often combined with sulfamethoxazole). These may affect how this medicine works in your body.
- Taking Lamistar tablet with trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole (TMP/SMX) once daily may increase lamivudine levels, but no dose adjustment is usually necessary.
- Do not take this medicine with zalcitabine, as they may interact and prevent each other from working properly.
