Medical Description

Breemax metered-dose inhaler is used as regular controller treatment for asthma and to help prevent wheezing, cough, chest tightness and breathlessness. It contains budesonide, a steroid medicine that calms swelling and irritation in the airways. By reducing airway inflammation, budesonide makes the breathing tubes less sensitive to asthma triggers and helps keep airflow easier. Breemax inhaler is breathed into the lungs through the mouth and is not a rescue treatment for a sudden severe asthma attack. Use it as prescribed even when your breathing feels normal.

Uses

  • Asthma control: Asthma can inflame and narrow the airways, causing wheezing, cough, chest tightness or breathlessness; Breemax inhaler reduces this inflammation to support easier breathing.
  • Prevention of asthma symptoms: Used as a controller, budesonide lowers airway sensitivity and may reduce the return or worsening of symptoms between attacks.

Contraindications

If you are allergic to any ingredient of this medicine or milk proteins, do not use it. Breemax inhaler must not be used for status asthmaticus, a severe asthma emergency in which attacks follow one another without settling, because it does not give immediate relief. Tell your doctor about an untreated infection, tuberculosis or another lung infection before use.

Side effects

  • Mouth fungal infection: The inhaled medicine can allow white patches, soreness or burning in the mouth. Rinse and spit after use, and seek medical advice if these signs appear.
  • Hoarseness: The inhaled medicine can irritate the voice box and make your voice rough. Rinse your mouth after use and report persistent voice changes.
  • Cough and throat irritation: The inhaled medicine may trigger coughing or a scratchy throat soon after use. Seek urgent help if breathing suddenly worsens.
  • Change in taste: The inhaled medicine may leave an unusual taste after inhalation. Rinse your mouth and tell your doctor if it does not settle.
  • Pneumonia: A chest infection may cause fever, worsening cough or breathing difficulty during treatment. Get prompt medical help if these symptoms develop.

Dosage

Overdose

Using too much Breemax inhaler may cause steroid-related effects or worsening throat and mouth symptoms. If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact your doctor immediately or visit the nearest hospital.

Missed a Dose

If you missed any dose of medicine, take it as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dose schedule. Do not take a double dose of medicine to compensate for the missed one.

How does this medicine work?

The budesonide component is a steroid medicine. It reduces swelling and irritation in the airways, making the breathing tubes less sensitive to triggers and helping airflow remain easier.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Some medicines can affect the way Breemax inhaler works. Tell your doctor about all the medicines, vitamins and supplements you take. In particular, tell your doctor if you use ketoconazole or itraconazole, ritonavir, nelfinavir or indinavir, clarithromycin, other steroid medicines, or salbutamol and other asthma medicines. Antifungal, certain human immunodeficiency virus and antibiotic medicines may raise budesonide exposure, while other steroid or asthma medicines may add to unwanted effects.

Interactions with food items

Avoid large amounts of grapefruit or grapefruit juice because they may increase budesonide levels and unwanted effects.
