Loteprednol Etabonate medicine is an Ophthalmic Corticosteroid. It decreases inflammation (e.g., redness, swelling, warmth and pain) of the eye.
Uses
This medicine is used to treat certain eye conditions due to inflammation or injury. It is also used after eye surgery.
Contraindications
When should one not use Loteprednol Etabonate
- Do not take this medicine if:
- You are allergic to this medicine or any other Corticosteroids
- You have eye disease due to viruses such as herpes simplex, vaccinia and varicella
- You have eye disease due to mycobacterium and fungi
- You are breastfeeding
Side effects
Common side effects of this drug are:
- Increased pain in the eye when exposed to bright light
- Redness of eyes
- Corneal defect
- Eye discharge
- Ocular discomfort
- Dry eyes
- Foreign body sensation in eyes
- Burning sensation at the site of the instillation of eye drops
- Rise in eye pressure
- Watering from eyes
- Itching in eyes
- Headache

- You have glaucoma, blurred vision

- Anticholinergics (use in asthma, abdominal cramps or muscle spasm)

Dosage
Overdose
Overuse of this medicine can cause delayed healing. Prolonged use of corticosteroids including this ophthalmic preparation, may lead to immunosuppression and increase the incidence of secondary ocular infections (including fungal infections). Both slow healing and secondary infections are very much dreaded in a postoperative patient. Consult with your doctor as soon as possible.
Missed a Dose
If you happen to miss a dose, follow the regular dosing schedule. Do not double the dose.
