Medical Description
Vonavir tablet is a combination of antiretroviral medications used to treat HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) infection. It works by boosting the immune system to fight HIV and manage or treat AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome). This medication helps to restrict the growth of HIV in the body, reducing the risk of HIV-related complications and improving the lifespan of the individual. For optimal effectiveness, it is recommended to take Vonavir tablet on an empty stomach and at the same time every day. Missing doses can affect recovery, so it is important to follow the prescribed regimen and complete the full treatment course as a doctor advises.
Some individuals may experience bone pain while on this treatment. To address this, a doctor may recommend calcium and vitamin D supplements. Additionally, birth control pills may be ineffective when taking this medication, so alternative reliable birth control methods should be used.
Common side effects of Vonavir tablet include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, flatulence, trouble sleeping, headache, rash, and sinusitis. These side effects are generally not severe but should be reported to a doctor if they persist or become bothersome. The medication may also cause dizziness or drowsiness, so activities such as driving should be avoided. Alcohol consumption can increase the intensity of side effects and should be avoided.
Before starting treatment with Vonavir tablet, it is important to consult a doctor, especially if pregnant, breastfeeding, or having kidney, liver, or bone disease. Regular blood tests may be suggested to monitor blood counts, liver function, and kidney function. If HIV positive, it is advised not to breastfeed or share personal items like razors or toothbrushes. Safe sex methods should be discussed with a doctor to prevent the transmission of HIV during intercourse.
Uses
Contraindications
- Vonavir tablet should not be used by individuals who are allergic to its active substances or any listed excipients. It is also contraindicated for patients with severe liver impairment (CPT, Class C).
- Co-administration with certain medications such as terfenadine, astemizole, cisapride, midazolam, triazolam, pimozide, bepridil, or ergot alkaloids (e.g., ergotamine) is not recommended due to the risk of serious adverse reactions, including cardiac arrhythmias and respiratory depression.
- Co-administration with elbasvir/grazoprevir is contraindicated, as efavirenz can significantly reduce their plasma concentrations, leading to loss of therapeutic effect.
- Voriconazole should not be used with Vonavir tablet since efavirenz decreases its plasma concentrations, while voriconazole increases efavirenz concentrations.
- Herbal preparations containing St. John's wort are not recommended due to the reduced clinical effects of efavirenz.
- Vonavir tablet should not be administered to patients with a family history of sudden death, congenital QTc interval prolongation, symptomatic cardiac arrhythmias, clinically relevant bradycardia, congestive cardiac failure with reduced left ventricle ejection fraction, or severe electrolyte disturbances (e.g., hypokalemia or hypomagnesemia).
- Caution is advised against co-administration with medications known to prolong the QTc interval, including certain antiarrhythmics (Classes IA and III), neuroleptics, antidepressants, some antibiotics (macrolides, fluoroquinolones, imidazole, and triazole antifungals), non-sedating antihistamines, cisapride, flecainide, certain antimalarials, and methadone.
