Medical Description

Oncip tablet is an antibiotic used for certain bacterial infections, including selected infections of the urinary tract, intestines, skin and soft tissues, or other sites when ciprofloxacin is appropriate. It contains ciprofloxacin, a fluoroquinolone antibiotic that kills susceptible bacteria. Ciprofloxacin blocks bacterial enzymes needed to copy, separate and repair genetic material, so the bacteria cannot multiply and die. This tablet is taken by mouth with water only when prescribed for the diagnosed or suspected bacterial infection, and it does not treat viral illnesses such as colds or flu.

Uses

  • Urinary tract infections: Certain bacterial infections affecting the bladder or urinary passages may improve when the bacteria are susceptible to ciprofloxacin and a clinician selects this treatment.
  • Intestinal infections: Some bacterial infections of the intestines can cause diarrhoea and stomach symptoms; ciprofloxacin may help clear them when medically appropriate.
  • Skin and soft-tissue infections: Infections involving the skin or tissues beneath it may be treated when the responsible bacteria are susceptible to ciprofloxacin.
  • Other susceptible bacterial infections: Ciprofloxacin may be chosen for selected infections at other body sites when testing or clinical assessment supports its use.

Contraindications

If you are allergic to any ingredient of this medicine, do not use Oncip tablet. Do not use it if you have had a serious reaction to ciprofloxacin or another quinolone antibiotic. Tell your doctor before use if you have seizures, tendon problems, heart rhythm problems, kidney disease, or a history of serious antibiotic-related diarrhoea. Older adults and people who have received a kidney, heart or lung transplant need specific medical advice because serious tendon and nerve problems are more likely.

Side effects

  • Nausea: Ciprofloxacin can upset the stomach and cause queasiness. Seek medical advice if vomiting prevents you from keeping fluids or the tablet down.
  • Vomiting: Some people may be sick after using this antibiotic, which can cause dehydration. Contact your doctor if vomiting continues or you cannot drink.
  • Stomach pain: Irritation in the digestive tract may cause cramps or discomfort. Get medical help for severe pain, repeated vomiting or a swollen abdomen.
  • Diarrhoea: Antibiotic-related bowel changes can continue after treatment. Contact a doctor promptly for persistent, watery or bloody diarrhoea, especially with fever.
  • Tendon pain: Ciprofloxacin can inflame or damage tendons, especially in older adults or transplant recipients. Stop strenuous activity and seek medical advice for pain or swelling.

Precautions and Warnings

Pregnancy

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, planning pregnancy or could become pregnant. Oncip tablet should be used during pregnancy only when the doctor considers it necessary.

Breast Feeding

Breast Feeding

Tell your doctor if you are breastfeeding. Ciprofloxacin can pass into breast milk, so your doctor will decide whether to use Oncip tablet or recommend another option.

Directions for Use

Take this medicine as a whole with sufficient water. Use Oncip tablet exactly as prescribed, and do not take it with milk or yoghurt alone. Keep antacids and mineral supplements containing aluminium, magnesium, calcium, iron or zinc separate as advised, because they lower absorption. Stop strenuous activity and contact your doctor promptly if tendon pain or swelling develops.

Storage and disposal

Store Oncip tablet in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep it out of the reach of children. Do not use tablets after the expiry date. Ask a pharmacist how to dispose of unused medicine; do not share it with another person.

Quick Tips

  • Take Oncip tablet only for the infection diagnosed by your doctor, not for a cold or flu.
  • Drink enough water unless your doctor has restricted fluids.
  • Stop exercise and report tendon pain or swelling promptly.
  • Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, facial swelling, severe rash or persistent watery diarrhoea.
  • Do not share leftover antibiotics or save them for a future illness.

Dosage

Overdose

Taking too much Oncip tablet may cause nausea, dizziness, confusion or other harmful effects. If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact your doctor immediately or visit the nearest hospital.

Missed a Dose

If you missed any dose of medicine, take it as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dose schedule. Do not take a double dose of medicine to compensate for the missed one.

How does this medicine work?

Ciprofloxacin is an antibiotic that kills bacteria. It blocks bacterial enzymes needed to copy, separate and repair their genetic material. Without these processes, the bacteria cannot multiply and eventually die. It does not treat viral illnesses such as colds or flu.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Some medicines can affect the way Oncip tablet works. Tell your doctor about all the medicines, vitamins and supplements you take. In particular, mention tizanidine, antacids, mineral supplements, medicines that affect heart rhythm or the nervous system, warfarin and other blood thinners, theophylline, corticosteroids, medicines for diabetes, medicines that affect kidney function, and medicines used after organ transplantation. Antacids and minerals lower ciprofloxacin absorption, tizanidine and theophylline can reach higher levels, blood thinners may increase bleeding, corticosteroids increase tendon risk, and some combinations alter heart rhythm, blood sugar or seizure risk.

Interactions with food items

Do not take Oncip tablet with milk or yoghurt alone, because calcium can lower ciprofloxacin absorption. Use water and follow the separation advice for mineral-containing foods or supplements.
