Propanal 20 mg Tablet is a prescription medicine. Lowering heart-related chest pain, high blood pressure, rhythm disorders, etc., are the main uses of Propanal 20 mg Tablet. It is also used in certai
n conditions such as obstructive heart diseases, adrenal gland tumours, etc., to lower the stress on the heart, high blood pressure, and increase the conduction and output of blood. The active ingredient in Propanal 20 mg Tablet is propranolol, a beta-blocker. The mode of action of Propanal 20 mg Tablet is to increase the blood flow to the heart and slow down the heart rate by blocking certain chemical messengers. It can also reduce the risk of stroke or chest pain while maintaining normal cardiac output. Dizziness, drowsiness, headache, low heart rate, etc., are some of the common side effects of Propanal 20 mg Tablet. Follow your doctor’s directions for using Propanal 20 mg Tablet. Inform your doctor if you have a history of any severe heart condition. This tablet is also not indicated if the heart rate is around 45 to 50 beats per second. Inform your doctor before taking this medicine if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Uses of Propanal 20 MG
- As per CDSCO and USFDA, Propanal 20 mg Tablet is used to:
- Treat angina pectoris (chest pain due to low blood flow)
- Treat cardiac arrhythmia (any rhythm disorder)
- Treat pheochromocytoma (a tumour on the adrenal gland)
- Treat hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy (low blood flow due to chance in the structure of the heart)
- Treat hypertension (lowers blood pressure)
- Treat acute myocardial infarction, only used after recovery
- Treat essential tremor
- Treat hyperthyroidism and thyrotoxicosis
- Treat migraine
- Manage upper gastrointestinal bleeding in patients with portal hypertension and oesophageal varices
Contraindications of Propanal 20 MG
- Do not take Propanal 20 mg Tablets, or use caution:
- If you are allergic to the active and inactive ingredients of Propanal 20 mg Tablet.
- If you have uncontrolled and refractory heart failure.
- If you have a severe low heart rate or bradycardia (less than 45 -50 beats per minute).
- If you have sick sinus syndrome (a type of heart block and second or third degrees heart block).
- If you are diagnosed with decompensated cardiac insufficiency (structural or functional change in the heart).
- If you have a history of severe breathing problems such as asthma.
- If you have severe low blood pressure.
- If you have untreated pheochromocytoma (tumour on adrenal glands).
- If you are at risk of having fluctuating blood glucose levels.
- If you have low cardiac output, this tablet should be not be given to lower blood pressure after an acute heart attack or myocardial infarction.

- You have an electrolyte imbalance. Appropriate steps should be taken to restore or maintain it.
- You notice any skin rashes or dry eyes.
- You plan to have cataract surgery and are using this tablet.
- You have severe liver damage or injury, jaundice (yellowing of skin and eyes)
- You have any known heart condition.
- You have a blockage in the arteries of the heart.
- You have any blood circulation disorders such as Raynaud’s syndrome (low blood flow to fingers and toes).
- You plan to have any surgery or dental procedure, and anaesthetic medicines are to be used during procedures.
- Your pulse rate is either falling or fluctuating.
- You have kidney insufficiency.
- You are diagnosed with psoriasis, a skin condition.
- You have a thyroid problem.
- You are diagnosed with myasthenia gravis (muscle disorder).

How Does It Work?
Directions for Use of Propanal 20 MG
- Take Propanal 20 mg Tablet precisely as advised by your doctor.
- Do not alter the dosage of Propanal 20 mg Tablet, even if you do not notice any changes or relief in symptoms.
- Swallow Propanal 20 mg Tablet as a whole with a glass of water. Do not break, crush, or chew it.
- Do not suddenly discontinue the use of Propanal 20 mg Tablet, as it can have withdrawal effects.
- For optimal pharmacological effects, take Propanal 20 mg Tablet at the same time every day.
Interactions of Propanal 20 MG
Interactions with other medicines
- Using Propanal 20 mg Tablet along with other medicines that lower blood pressure, such as verapamil or diltiazem, can lower the influence of this tablet. They should not be used together.
- If you are taking digitalis glycosides, using Propanal Tablet may affect the conduction time of the heart.
- Using antidepressants like monoamine oxidase inhibitors inhibitors (MAOIs) with this tablet can lower its effect and cause high blood pressure.
- Class I antiarrhythmic agents (e.g. disopyramide, quinidine) and amiodarone should be used with caution along with the Propanal tablet. They can cause several conduction problems.
- Using Propanal Tablet with insulin and oral antidiabetic medicines may increase the blood sugar controlling effect of these medications, which can lead to low blood sugar.
- Some medicines used for anaesthesia can increase heart rate and also increase the risk of low blood pressure.
- Some medications that can increase the effects of Propanal Tablet include ACE inhibitors like enalapril, angiotensin-II antagonists like Losartan, anxiolytics, hypnotics, diuretics, alpha-blockers.
- Several different medicines that can lower the effects of Propanal Tablets are NSAIDs, corticosteroids, oestrogen, and progesterone.
Interactions with food items
- It is better to avoid caffeine-containing food and drinks as caffeine can lower the effectiveness of the Propanal 20 mg Tablet.
