Molecule Description

Clobetasol is a steroid. It is used in the form of local application in the treatment of itching in skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, allergies, etc.

Uses of Clobetasol

  • Skin conditions (such as eczema, dermatitis, psoriasis, itching)
  • Skin complaints, like redness, swelling, burning sensation and pain

Contraindications of Clobetasol

When should one not use Clobetasol

  • Allergic (hypersensitive) to Clobetasol Propionate or any other ingredients of this medicine
  • If a child is under one year of age
  • Acne
  • Severe skin flushing on and around your nose (rosacea)
  • Spotty red rash around your mouth (perioral dermatitis)
  • Itching around your genitals (penis or vagina) or anus
  • Infected skin

Side effects of Clobetasol

Common side effects of this drug are:

  • Thinning of skin – stretch marks
  • Dry skin
  • Acne
  • Hair loss
  • Burning, itching, skin irritation at the site of application
  • If used for too long you may experience weight gain, swelling of face, lips, eyelids
  • Sleep disturbances and mood changes
  • Severe skin irritation
  • In children - slow growth

Can I take Clobetasol during pregnancy?
Clobetasol should not be used during pregnancy.

Breast Feeding

Can I take Clobetasol while breastfeeding?
Local application is probably safe. Do not use it on the breast area if you are using any local applicator containing Clobetasol.


Can I drive if I have consumed Clobetasol?
No caution required.


Can I consume alcohol with Clobetasol?
No known interaction.

Other General Warnings

Talk to your doctor if
  • You develop an infection while using this medicine
  • Make sure to clean the skin before applying medicine
  • Be cautious not to apply near eye or eyelids
  • Don't use in children for more than five days
  • Don't take this medicine for more than four weeks

It decreases the action of chemicals in the body that cause swelling, itching – thereby reducing the itching in skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, allergies, etc.

Numerous medicines are known to have minor interactions with Clobetasol. Inform your physician about all prescription and non-prescription medicines that you are taking before starting on this treatment. Inform your doctor if you are taking Ritonavir and Itraconazole.

In case you forget to apply the medicine as per the prescription, use the medicine as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next application, skip the missed one and go back to regular schedule. Do not use double the amount to compensate for the missed application.
