Medical Description

Melzap MD is a prescription medication. It is used to treat epilepsy (seizure disorders) and panic disorders. Melzap MD constitutes the medicine Clonazepam (1mg). Epilepsy is a neurological condition characterised by the presence of seizures or convulsions. This occurs due to abnormal electrical activity in the brain, and as a result, signals are transmitted without regulation resulting in the symptoms like abnormal movements of limbs, uprolling of eyes, blank vacant stare, frothing at the mouth, tongue bite, loss of consciousness, the involuntary passage of urine or stools, etc. Epilepsy is a condition that requires long-term treatment and management with pharmacological agents called anti-epileptics. Panic disorders are a type of anxiety disorder. Patients experience the occurrence of unexpected panic attacks, often occurring repeatedly. A panic attack can be associated with increased sweating, difficulty in breathing, chest pain, palpitations, nausea and vomiting, dizziness, light-headedness, fear of losing control, and fear of imminent danger and impending doom. Panic disorders require sustained treatment to improve the patient's quality of life.

Contraindications

If you are hypersensitive to Clonazepam or other benzodiazepines or any components in this tablet.
If you have acute narrow-angle glaucoma
If you have respiratory insufficiency
If you have liver disease.
If you have underlying kidney failure.
If you have a congenital blood condition called porphyria is contraindicated.
If you have myasthenia gravis.
If you are a patient with impaired consciousness and coma.
If you have a history of depression and suicidal ideation.

Precautions and Warnings

Pregnancy

Clonazepam is unsafe in pregnancy. It is a class D medication. It can cause abnormalities in the developing fetus. Discuss with your treating physician for more information. Inform your doctor regarding your pregnancy or intention to conceive.

Breast Feeding

Clonazepam is excreted in breast milk and may cause harm to the feeding infant. Do not use this medication if you are currently breastfeeding.

Driving

Driving, swimming, and operating heavy machinery immediately after starting this medication are strictly not advisable. It can take a few weeks for the effects of this medication to manifest and patients can still develop seizures in the meanwhile. This medication can also cause sleepiness, dizziness, and impaired muscle control, and hence driving is generally not recommended.

Alcohol

The consumption of alcohol with Melzap MD is strictly contraindicated. It can result in the inactivation of the effects of the tablet, as well as, causing serious life-threatening side effects like respiratory failure, coma, and death.

Other General Warnings

Talk to your doctor if

You are taking any other medications, as they may interfere with the efficacy of Melzap MD.
You experience any mood changes while using this medicine.
You have a history of addiction or substance use.

Directions for Use

Take Melzap MD as prescribed by your doctor.
Take it for the entire duration of the prescription.
Taking this tablet at the same time every day is beneficial.
Swallow this tablet whole. Do not break, crush, or chew this tablet.
Abruptly stopping this medicine can cause withdrawal symptoms.
It can require a few weeks of continuous usage for optimal effects to manifest.
This medication has habit-forming tendencies; hence it is recommended to follow the directions of your treating physician precisely and have regular follow-ups.

Storage and disposal

Store under 30°c in a cool, dry place, away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children. Do not use it beyond the date of expiration. Dispose it off safely along with the other biomedical waste.

Dosage

Overdose

The overdose symptoms develop rapidly. Initial symptoms may include excessive sleepiness, double vision, slurring of speech, and poor motor functions. This may proceed to respiratory failure, fall in BP and heart rate, coma, cardiac arrest, and even death. In case of a suspected overdose of Melzap MD, rush the patient to a hospital.

Missed a Dose

It is strongly recommended not to miss a single dose of this tablet. A missed dose can result in seizures. In case you miss a dose, take this as soon as you remember. If the duration elapsed is too long and it is almost time for your next dose, return to your regular schedule and omit the missed dose. Do not double the dose.

Mode of Action

How Does It Work?

Clonazepam is a benzodiazepine. It works to modulate specific brain receptors and pathways involving the chemical messenger (neurotransmitter) called GABA (Gamma Amino Butyric Acid). It essentially helps in decreasing the excess and uncoordinated electrical activity of the neurons in the brain. This controls seizures, and produces a sedating, calming effect on the brain and generalised muscle relaxation.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

It is strictly contraindicated to mix Melzap MD with other CNS depressants like alcohol. It can negate the effects of anti-epileptics and can also cause life-threatening adverse effects like profound sedation, respiratory difficulty, coma, and can result in death.
Do not use Melzap MD with opioids (like morphine, tramadol etc.). It is contraindicated as it can cause respiratory depression (failure of breathing), coma and death.
Inform your physician regarding your current medications at the time of prescription of Melzap MD.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Drowsiness is a common side effect of Melzap MD. Talk to your doctor if it is impairing your functioning. Your doctor will be able to guide you through managing your symptoms and provide alternate therapeutic options. Do not abruptly stop Melzap MD without your doctor's direction, as it may cause withdrawal effects.

You will need at least 4 weeks of continuous use with Melzap MD after your diagnosis. Your doctor will adjust the dose and decide the total duration of treatment based on your response to it. Talk to your doctor for more information. Review with your doctor regularly.

Melzap MD is not known to affect menstruation. In case of any delay in the menstrual cycle, visit your doctor at the earliest.
