Medical Description

Citalin 20 mg Tab belongs to a group of medicines known as anxiolytics. It contains escitalopram oxalate as its active ingredient. It is used to treat clinical depression, social anxiety disorders, panic disorders, and sleep problems. Depression and anxiety disorders present themselves as constant, deep, strong feelings of worry, fear, and indecisiveness in daily activities. Escitalopram acts by regulating the serotonin levels in the body, thus alleviating the mood and improving behavior. Citalin 20 mg Tab is an oral tablet to be taken with or without food. It is important to take the dose every day at the same time. Citalin 20 mg Tab is not prescribed for patients under 12 years. It can treat clinical depression and anxiety in children and teenagers aged 12 to 17 years. Citalin 20 mg Tab has a risk of developing withdrawal syndrome if stopped abruptly; therefore, consultation with the physician is a must to taper the dose.

Citalin 20 mg Tab overdose may cause Serotonin syndrome due to excess accumulation of serotonin in the body. It may be endangering to life if not medically treated on time. Any known cases of overdose with Citalin 20 mg Tab should be immediately reported to the emergency department of your nearest healthcare provider.

Missed a Dose

Citalin 20 mg Tab has to be taken every day at around the same time. If you miss a dose of Citalin 20 mg Tab, you can take the missed dose as soon as you realize that you have missed the dose. If the next scheduled dose is only a few hours away, it is advised not to take the missed dose and directly take the next scheduled dose and then continue as usual. Do not double your dose without consulting your physician. Inform your physician about any missed dose/doses.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

  • Citalin 20 mg Tab should be given with caution in patients taking the following medications:
  • Dose adjustment will be required when there is an increase/ decrease of Citalin 20 mg Tab levels.
  • Antidepressants like (selegiline, isocarboxazid, moclobemide) may worsen the risk of serotonin syndrome. Serotonin syndrome causes shivering, muscle stiffness, and fever due to too much accumulation of serotonin in the body
  • Non steroidal anti inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like aspirin and anticoagulants like warfarin can increase the risk of bleeding episodes
  • Meperidine (an opioid painkiller) -increases serotonin levels
  • Lithium - increases serotonin metabolism causing irregular heartbeat, which can be life-threatening if not treated on time
  • Tryptophan (amino acid required for the production of proteins) - can increase the risk of serotonin syndrome
  • Painkillers like tramadol carry the risk of developing serotonin syndrome
  • Linezolid (antibiotic) can cause life-threatening serotonin syndrome

Like most psychiatric medication, it may take up to 2 to 6 weeks for Citalin 20 mg Tab to ultimately show its full effects. Talk to your doctor if you think that Citalin 20 mg Tab does not seem to work for you or if you do not feel any better even after 6 weeks from the start of medication.

Caffeine does not seem to react adversely with escitalopram. Coffee or chocolate can be consumed within dietary limits while taking Citalin 20 mg Tab.
