Description
Potassium permanganate crystals are an oxidising agent with disinfectant, deodorising, and astringent properties. When fully dissolved and correctly diluted, the light pink solution may help dry wet, weeping skin. The crystals are caustic and must never be applied directly to the skin or swallowed.
How to Use
Use only a fully dissolved 1 in 10,000 solution prepared with warm water. This can be made by completely dissolving 100 mg in 1 L of water. Wear gloves while handling and mixing the crystals. The finished solution should be light pink.
Immerse the affected area for 10 to 20 minutes, twice daily. For a hand or foot, place the solution in a lined bowl or bucket. For a widespread weeping rash, the diluted solution may be added to bath water. For a small area, soak gauze in the diluted solution, gently squeeze out the excess, and apply it for 20 minutes without wrapping it around the skin.
After use, pat the area dry with a paper towel. Apply any prescribed topical cream only as instructed by a doctor. The applications may dry a weeping area within two to three days. Stop the soaks before the skin becomes too dry.
Side Effects
- Skin irritation, redness, pain, or hardening may occur.
- Brown staining of the skin and nails may occur. The solution can also discolour clothing.
Precautions and Warnings
- Never apply dry crystals or concentrated solution directly to the skin. They are caustic and can cause chemical burns.
- Wear gloves when handling the crystals, and use only the fully dissolved and correctly diluted solution.
- Avoid contact with the eyes and other sensitive areas.
- Do not swallow. Potassium permanganate is toxic by mouth and can be fatal. Seek medical attention immediately if swallowed.
- Keep the crystals and prepared solution securely out of reach of children.
- Do not use these soaks for dry skin conditions, and stop use before the skin becomes too dry.
- Do not wrap gauze or dressings soaked with the solution around the skin.
- Apply soft paraffin to the nails before use to help limit staining. The solution may stain skin, nails, clothing, baths, containers, and ceramic surfaces.
- Stop use and contact a doctor if an allergic reaction occurs.
