Medical Description
Nexpro 40 Tablet is a proton pump inhibitor class of medicines used to treat conditions caused by excessive stomach acid. It contains esomeprazole as the active ingredient. Nexpro 40 works by reducing acid production in the stomach. It works by reducing acid production, relieving symptoms, and promoting healing. It is usually taken on an empty stomach, and your doctor will determine the dosage and duration of treatment.
Common side effects may include headaches, digestive issues (diarrhoea, stomach pain), and potential dizziness. It’s important to inform your doctor about any existing health conditions, medications you are taking, and whether you are pregnant or breastfeeding before starting treatment.
While alcohol does not directly interact with Nexpro 40 Tablet, but consuming alcohol excessively can increase stomach acid production, which can be counteractive to the benefit of this medicine. For the best results, follow your doctor’s advice and avoid triggers like spicy foods, caffeine, and alcohol.
Some other medicines that contain esomeprazole are Esogress 40mg tablet, Raciper 40mg tablet, Esmetru 40mg tablet, Neksium 40mg tablet, and Sompraz 40 tablet.
Uses
- Nexpro 40 Tablet is a proton pump inhibitor that reduces the amount of acid your stomach produces.
- It is used to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), including erosive esophagitis, stomach ulcers, H. pylori infection, and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, a condition characterized by excessive acid secretion due to a pancreatic tumor.
- It is also used for the reduction of the risk of gastric ulcers in patients needing NSAIDs for long durations.
Contraindications
- If you are allergic to Esomeprazole or any other ingredients of Nexpro 40 tablet, or other antacids of the same family (Omeprazole, lansoprazole, and rabeprazole)
- If you are taking an anti-HIV medicine (atazanavir, nelfinavir).

- You are undergoing long-term treatment with this medicine.
- You are using anti-HIV medicines (anti-retroviral therapy) like Atazanavir or Nelfinavir.
- You develop stomach infections after using Nexpro 40 tablets.
- You have unexplained weight loss, frequent vomiting, difficulty in swallowing, and bloody vomiting.
- You are an elderly patient on long-term therapy. It increases the risk of fracture of the hip, wrist and spine bones.
- You have a vitamin B12 deficiency. Prolonged therapy with this medicine can result in very low Vitamin B12 levels.
- You are undergoing treatment for a bacterial infection caused by H. pylori and are using an antibiotic called Clarithromycin.
- You have a skin disorder, Subacute cutaneous lupus erythematosus, characterised by a rash on areas of skin exposed to the sun.
- You have a magnesium deficiency. It can result in very low levels of magnesium characterised by weakness, fits, and irregular heartbeat.

- You can make lifestyle modifications like preventing excess intake of foods that cause acidity, like carbonated drinks and oily/fried food, regular exercise, and maintaining a healthy weight.
- It is also advised to limit alcohol intake and quit smoking for better treatment of your acid reflux.
