Medical Description

Qutipin Tablet contains quetiapine, an antipsychotic medicine used to treat mental disorders like schizophrenia, mania and bipolar disorder. Dopamine and serotonin are important neurotransmitters that control our mood, sleep, appetite, memory, motivation, reward, motor functions, arousal, desires, cravings, and decision making. Abnormal functioning of these neurotransmitters leads to symptoms such as hallucinations, delusions, mania, depression, euphoria, etc. Quetiapine controls the abnormal activities of these neurotransmitters and hence controls depression, mania and other related symptoms. Qutipin tablets should always be consumed as per the physician's advice. Do not stop the medicine abruptly without consulting your physician, as this medicine has withdrawal symptoms. This medicine should be consumed preferably with food, but in case of emergency can be consumed without food. To maintain a constant level of medicine in the body, try taking medication at the same time every day. If due to any reason the medicine is not taken on time or missed, consume it as soon as possible or at the next given time. This medicine has a few side effects like dizziness, sleepiness, and headaches. This medicine decreases haemoglobin level and drops your blood pressure when you change your position; hence one should stand and sit carefully. The patient has also experienced weight gain, increased blood glucose levels, increased serum triglycerides and cholesterol levels; thus, nutritious food and regular exercise are essential.

Precautions and Warnings

Pregnancy

Quetiapine comes under category C medicines. Its use in pregnancy can increase the chance of low birth weight in the baby. If the patient comes pregnant during the treatment with Qutipin Tablet, the doctor should explain the pros and cons to the patient.

Breast Feeding

Apart from low levels of mother's milk, infants exposed to quetiapine generally developed normally. Monitor the infant for drowsiness and developmental milestones, mainly if other antipsychotics are used concurrently.

Driving

It is not recommended to consume Qutipin Tablet before driving as it can cause drowsiness and dizziness, so the chances of accidents are higher.

Alcohol

It is recommended not to take alcohol with Qutipin Tablets, according to The Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Drinking alcohol causes the dose of quetiapine to be more potent and hence more dangerous. Also, these medicines' side effects like drowsiness or dizziness worsen after consuming this medicine.

Other General Warnings

Talk to your doctor if

You are experiencing a sudden rise in a heartbeat.
You are passing excess urine or drinking a lot of water or if there is extra weakness.
You are having suicidal thoughts.
You develop a rash after consuming this medicine.

Directions for Use

Qutipin Tablets should always be consumed as per the physician’s advice.
Do not stop the medicine abruptly without consulting your physician, as this medicine has withdrawal symptoms like nausea, vomiting and headaches.
This medicine should be consumed preferably with food, but in case of emergency can be consumed without food.
To maintain a constant level of medicine in the body, try taking medicine at the same time every day.
It should not be given to children under 10.

Storage and disposal

Qutipin tablets should be stored in a cool and dry place away from direct sunlight. Used tablet cover should be disposed of immediately. Discard the expired and damaged medicines as per instructions on the label. Keep it away from children and pets as its consumption can be hazardous.

Overdose

Overdose of Quetiapine tablets can cause intoxication. Symptoms of quetiapine intoxication include increased heartbeat, increased blood sugar levels, changes in ECG or coma. Talk to your doctor immediately if you feel you have taken an overdose.

Missed a Dose

In case you miss the dose, take the next dose as soon as you remember it. Skip the missed dose and continue with your routine schedule if your next dose is near. Do not take a double dose of Qutipin Tablet.

Interactions with other medicines

Qutipin Tablet should not be taken with the following medications
Antipsychotic medicine like Abilify, Clozaril is used for seizures.
Few antifungal medicines like clotrimazole, ketoconazole
Antiarrhythmic medicines such as quinidine.
Medicines used in dementia-like Donepezil
Medicines causing QT prolongation like Chlorpromazine
Medicines used in acute alcohol intoxication.
These medications can cause symptoms like headache, ECG changes, or dizziness.

Interactions with food items

Qutipin Tablet; a psychotic medicine, should not be consumed with alcohol as this can cause dizziness and drowsiness. Quetiapine interacts with grapefruit. Grapefruit blocks the metabolising enzyme of the medicine, thereby possibly increasing its blood levels.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

In rare cases, there can be hormonal changes in a female consuming Qutipin Tablet for a long time. An increase in prolactin hormone can alter monthly periods and may lead to breast milk production in women.

It varies from person to person but roughly takes around four to six weeks to show its effect. Allow your physician to observe your symptoms and monitor your dose accordingly closely.

Consuming Qutipin Tablets over a long time can raise your blood sugar levels and cause diabetes. It’s essential to monitor your blood sugars regularly and keep them in control. Consult your physician if you find any symptoms like excess urination, excess thirst or change in appetite.
