DescriptionDescription

Arora Potassium Permanganate Powder contains potassium permanganate, an oxidising agent with disinfectant, deodorising and astringent properties. When correctly diluted, it may help dry wet, oozing skin areas. The raw powder is dark purple or almost black, while a properly diluted topical solution should be light pink. It is for external or water-treatment use only and must never be swallowed.

How to UseHow to Use

Always dilute the powder before topical use. Wear gloves, dissolve it completely in warm water and prepare a final concentration of 1 in 10,000. The solution should be light pink.

  • For a hand or foot, place the dilute solution in a lined bowl or bucket. Soak the area for 10 to 20 minutes, twice daily, then pat it dry with a paper towel.
  • For a localised area, soak gauze in the dilute solution, gently squeeze out excess liquid and place it on the area for 20 minutes.
  • For a widespread weeping rash, the dilute solution may be added to bath water for soaking.
  • Apply petroleum jelly or yellow soft paraffin to the nails before soaking to help prevent brown staining.
  • Applications are usually used for 2 to 3 days. Stop the soaks before the skin becomes too dry. After patting the area dry, apply any prescribed topical treatment.
  • For water treatment, dissolve 1 g of powder in 1000 ml of water. Keep this preparation separate from topical preparations.

FeaturesFeatures

  • The raw material is dark purple or almost black and forms a light pink solution when correctly diluted for topical use.
  • Can be prepared for use as a skin soak, soaked gauze application, diluted bath or water-treatment solution.
  • Also known as Condy's crystals.

Side EffectsSide Effects

  • Skin irritation may occur.
  • The dilute solution may temporarily stain the skin and nails brown and may discolour clothing.

Precautions and WarningsPrecautions and Warnings

  • Never swallow the powder or solution. Seek medical attention immediately if swallowed.
  • Dry crystals and concentrated solutions are caustic and can cause redness, pain, skin hardening or chemical burns. Apply only a correctly diluted solution to the skin.
  • Wear gloves while handling and mixing the powder.
  • Avoid contact with the eyes and sensitive areas.
  • Keep the powder and prepared solution securely out of reach of children.
  • Stop use if an allergic reaction occurs.
  • Do not use potassium permanganate soaks for dry skin conditions.
  • Do not wrap potassium permanganate-soaked dressings.
  • The solution can stain clothing, baths, containers and ceramic surfaces. Take care during use and disposal.

IngredientsIngredients

  • Potassium permanganate (KMnO4): the active ingredient. Its oxidising action gives it disinfectant, deodorising and astringent properties.

ComparisonComparison

Potassium permanganate is also supplied as concentrated solutions and tablets that require their own dilution instructions. For fungal infections, topical azole or allylamine medicines may be more effective and more cosmetically acceptable. Ask a doctor which option is suitable.

UsesUses

  • May support care for wet, oozing skin areas associated with weeping eczema, impetiginised eczema, pompholyx and certain blistering skin conditions.
  • After correct dilution, it may be used to cleanse minor cuts, scrapes and wounds.
  • Localised areas may be covered with gauze soaked in the dilute solution, while widespread weeping areas may be soaked in a diluted bath.
  • It has a traditional topical use for fungal foot conditions such as athlete's foot.
  • The powder may also be prepared separately for water-treatment purposes.

BenefitsBenefits

  • Its astringent action may help dry excess fluid from wet, oozing skin.
  • Disinfectant and antiseptic properties may help reduce surface contamination on treated areas.
  • The deodorising action may help lessen unpleasant odour from weeping areas.
  • Its oxidising action may help remove impurities and contaminants during water treatment.
