What is a thermometer?

A thermometer is an instrument that is used to either measure or indicates the temperature. It has a long narrow passage with a bulb containing either alcohol or mercury. This alcohol or mercury rises through the passage due to the heat and the temperature can be measured by taking a reading from the thermometer. The reason why mercury is used in thermometers is that it is liquid at room temperature and has a high capacity to expand.

What is a Thermometer used for?

A thermometer is used in many places, including hospitals, clinics, laboratories, domestic households, factories, and even in restaurants. At hospitals and clinics, a thermometer is usually used for measuring the body temperature of patients, while at home it can be used for similar purposes. In factories, they can often be used to check the temperature of machinery and other equipment. In restaurants, they are often used to check the temperature of food.

Types of Thermometer

A thermometer of the modern age comes in several shapes and sizes and methods of temperature measurements. At first, the typical thermometer that uses mercury was commonly used. Later on, the digital variation of it entered the market that made the mercury thermometer obsolete. These digital thermometers are usually used for clinical purposes. More recently, one that uses infrared radiation has become quite popular as a contactless means of measuring temperature during the time of COVID-19.

A thermometer can be of the following types

  • Clinical: The thermometer price for this type can vary greatly because it is manufactured by numerous brands of differing qualities.
  • Laboratory: These thermometers come in several various types like mechanical, logging, and differential thermometer.
  • Laser or Infrared: A laser, thermal, or forehead thermometer uses infrared light to measure the temperature.
  • Six’s maximum and minimum: These types of thermometers are used to measure the maximum and minimum temperature over an extended period.
  • Kata: These thermometers use alcohol instead of mercury for measuring temperature.
