Dolonex DT 20mg Tablet is an anti-inflammatory painkiller used for symptomatic relief of pain, swelling and stiffness in osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and ankylosing spondylitis. It contains piroxicam as a dispersible tablet.
Piroxicam blocks cyclo-oxygenase enzymes, which produce prostaglandins, the chemicals that generate pain, swelling and fever at a site of inflammation. Blocking their production reduces all three.
It differs from most anti-inflammatories in how long it lasts, remaining active for around two days after a dose. That allows once-daily dosing but also means any adverse effect on the stomach or kidneys is sustained rather than transient, which is why it is restricted to second-line use at a maximum of twenty milligrams daily.
It is normally prescribed alongside a stomach-protecting medicine, and your doctor should review the need for it within about two weeks. Seek urgent help for black stools, vomit like coffee grounds or severe stomach pain.
Stop the medicine and seek immediate help for any rash, particularly with fever or blistering, as piroxicam carries a higher risk of serious skin reactions than most of its class.
Ugesic 20 tablets, Pirox DT tablets, and Suganril tablets also contain piroxicam as their active medicine.
