Proctology, now often referred to as coloproctology or colorectal surgery, is the surgical specialty focused on the diagnosis and management of disorders of the rectum, anus, and sigmoid colon. This field manages a wide range of conditions, from benign conditions like fistulas, fissures, and piles to life-threatening malignancies like anal and rectal cancer, using both medical and surgical treatment when needed.
Proctologists specialise in the delicate anatomy of the pelvic floor and the sphincters that control bowel movements. Modern proctology emphasises minimally painful recovery through laser treatments and minimally invasive stapler procedures, moving away from the highly painful open surgeries of the past.
In India, a proctologist is usually a general surgeon who has focused their practice on colorectal health. After completing an MBBS, they often complete an MS (Master of Surgery) or DNB in general surgery. Many may enhance their expertise with a fellowship in colorectal surgery or a super-specialisation in surgical gastroenterology when needed. They are experts in both the conservative "medical" management of bowel habits and the "surgical" repair of anatomical defects in the lower gastrointestinal tract and pelvic floor.
A proctologist evaluates symptoms such as rectal bleeding, pain, or changes in bowel habits through physical examination and diagnostic procedures and treats those conditions depending on the severity.
You should seek a "surgery opinion" if you experience:
Note - Serious symptoms require in-person consultation with a colorectal surgeon. You may choose to consult a colorectal surgeon online for day-to-day problems, queries, and second opinions.
