The high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) test is a blood test that measures very small amounts of C-reactive protein (CRP) in the blood. CRP is a marker (protein) produced by the liver in response to infection, tissue injury, or inflammation. Inflammation is a natural response of the body to infections, injuries, or harmful substances, which helps protect and heal tissues.

When there is inflammation or infection in the body, CRP levels rise in the blood. Therefore, the CRP test is done to detect and monitor a variety of health conditions typically associated with inflammation in the body. Although both CRP and hs-CRP tests are useful for identifying inflammation, the hs-CRP test is more sensitive than the standard CRP test and can detect even minor elevations in CRP levels and low-grade inflammation.

What to Expect Before the hs-CRP Test

No fasting is required for a standalone hs-CRP test. You can eat and drink normally. However, if it is part of a broader package that includes fasting tests, your doctor may advise fasting for 8-12 hours. Avoid strenuous exercise for 24 hours before the test, as intense physical activity can temporarily raise hs-CRP levels and affect interpretation. Always inform your doctor about any ongoing medications.

What to Expect During the Blood Collection

A phlebotomist cleans the skin with an antiseptic, then places an elastic band around your upper arm to make the veins easier to access. A small needle is inserted into the vein; you may feel a brief pinch. Blood is collected into a labelled tube in under a minute.
