Know More About The Test
Overview
An Electrocardiograph (ECG or EKG) is a simple, non-invasive diagnostic test that records the electrical activity of your heart. It helps detect certain heart diseases by the representation of the heart’s electrical activity in the form of a graph (electrocardiogram). Electrodes placed on your chest, arms, and legs capture this activity and produce a graph that is then studied by a doctor to interpret the report. ECG helps a doctor detect heart rhythm disorders, heart block, and other heart diseases. The doctor may also advise more tests, such as a stress test(TMT), 2D echocardiography, and some blood tests if needed.
Risk Assessment
An ECG helps in early detection of heart issues that could lead to:
- Stroke
- Heart attack
- Arrhythmia
- Sudden cardiac arrest
- Progressive heart failure - Risk is higher in individuals with diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, or a family history of heart disease.
What does this Test Detect?
The ECG test helps detect:
- Irregularities in heart rhythm (arrhythmias)
- Heart attacks (myocardial infarction)
- Poor blood flow to the heart (ischemia)
- Other heart rhythm disorders
- Structural and functional disorders of the heart.
Indications for ECG Test
Doctors may recommend an ECG if you experience symptoms such as:
- Chest pain or discomfort
- Shortness of breath
- Dizziness or fainting spells
- Rapid, irregular, or slow heartbeat
- Fatigue with an unknown cause
- High blood pressure or a history of heart disease
- It is also routinely used before surgeries, during health check-ups, and for heart monitoring in chronic conditions like diabetes and hypertension or after you've undergone a pacemaker implantation.
How frequently should you take this test?
The frequency depends on your doctor’s advice based on the reason you are getting the ECG and your medical history. Generally, you can expect:
- Routine check-up: Once every 1–2 years if you're at risk of heart disease
- Symptomatic or heart condition present: As advised by your doctor, definitely once a year
- High-risk individuals: More frequent monitoring may be recommended
Test Preparation
Before Test
- No special preparation is usually needed
- Inform your doctor beforehand about any medications you’re taking
- Avoid applying lotions or oils on your chest as it may affect electrode contact
- It's best to wear loose, comfortable clothing that is easy to remove from the upper body while placing electrodes.
During Test
- You’ll be asked to lie still on your back
- Small electrodes will be attached to your chest, arms, and legs after a gel is applied
- The test is painless and takes about 5–10 minutes
After Test
- The gel will be wiped off, and the electrodes removed
- You can resume normal activities immediately. There will be no discomfort or uneasiness.
- Your doctor will review the ECG report and explain the findings
Risk and Limitations
In most cases, ECG is highly accurate and reliable for both diagnosis and regular health care check-up. It is safe and causes no discomfort as it is completely non-invasive.
However,
- It may not detect all heart problems, especially those that occur intermittently like early blockages of coronary arteries.
- Sometimes, false positives/negatives may occur, leading to further tests. This is usually a problem with the machine or how it is operated.
- A normal ECG report does not guarantee a disease-free heart. Many problems cannot be detected by ECG. Consult a cardiologist for a complete evaluation of your heart health.
Cautions & Warnings
- An abnormal ECG result does not always indicate heart disease—interpretation should be done by a qualified physician.
- If you have a pacemaker or are undergoing treatment for a heart condition, let the technician know
- Avoid movement and talking during the test for accurate results
Test Parameters
Parameter | What It Indicates |
Heart Rate | Measures the number of heartbeats per minute. Helps detect tachycardia or bradycardia. |
Heart Rhythm | Assesses whether the heart is beating in a regular, coordinated pattern (sinus rhythm). |
P Wave | Represents the electrical activity of the atria (upper chambers) as they contract. |
PR Interval | Time taken for the electrical impulse to travel from the atria to the ventricles. |
QRS Complex | Indicates the contraction (depolarization) of the ventricles (lower chambers). |
QT Interval | Measures the time for ventricles to contract and then recover (repolarisationze). |
ST Segment | Shows the early part of ventricular repolarization. Abnormalities may indicate ischemia. |
T Wave | Represents the recovery (repolarization) of the ventricles after a heartbeat. |
QRS Axis | Reflects the general direction of the heart’s electrical activity; helps identify conduction issues or chamber enlargement. |
