Know More About The Test
A quick info on AMH test
Overview
The anti-müllerian hormone (AMH) test is a blood test that measures the level of AMH, a hormone involved in reproductive development and fertility. In women, AMH is produced by the small follicles that contain immature eggs. The hormone level reflects ovarian reserve, or the approximate number of eggs remaining in the ovaries, and naturally declines with age. Doctors commonly recommend the AMH test as part of a fertility evaluation to estimate how the ovaries may respond to treatments such as in vitro fertilisation (IVF). However, the test does not measure egg quality or predict the chances of natural conception.
The AMH test may also help evaluate conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS/PMOS), reduced ovarian reserve, and the transition towards menopause. In some cases, it is used to monitor certain ovarian tumours. In people with testes, AMH is produced by the testicles and plays an important role in reproductive development before birth. In infants and children, the test may help assess undescended testicles or investigate certain differences in reproductive development. The AMH test requires only a blood sample, usually does not require fasting or any special preparation, and in women, it can be done on any day of the menstrual cycle.
When and Who Should Get a AMH Test Done?
Your doctor may recommend an AMH (Anti-Müllerian Hormone) test in the following situations:
- People with ovaries experiencing difficulty conceiving - To assess ovarian reserve (the approximate number of eggs remaining) as part of a fertility evaluation.
- People planning IVF or other fertility treatments - To estimate how the ovaries may respond to fertility medications and help guide treatment planning.
- People planning pregnancy later in life - To assess ovarian reserve and support fertility counselling.
- People with symptoms of PCOS (PMOS) - Such as irregular or missed periods, acne, excessive facial or body hair, hair thinning on the scalp, unexplained weight gain, or dark patches on the skin.
- People with suspected reduced ovarian reserve or early menopause - To support the evaluation of declining ovarian function.
- People being treated for certain ovarian tumours (such as granulosa cell tumours) - To monitor treatment response and detect recurrence.
- Male infants or children with undescended testicles - To determine whether healthy testicular tissue is present.
- Infants or children with differences in reproductive development - To help identify the underlying cause when interpreted along with chromosome testing, hormone tests, imaging, and other investigations.
- Girls and young women undergoing chemotherapy or other cancer treatments - To assess whether the treatment may affect ovarian reserve and future fertility.
Note - The need for an AMH test depends on your symptoms, reproductive organs, age, and medical history. Your doctor will recommend the test if it is appropriate for your clinical condition.
What Conditions Can an AMH Test Help Detect?
An AMH test is not a standalone diagnostic test, but it can help your doctor evaluate or monitor the following conditions:
- Reduced ovarian reserve - Helps assess whether the number of eggs remaining in the ovaries is lower than expected for your age and predict how the ovaries may respond to fertility treatments such as IVF.
- PCOS/PMOS - High AMH levels may support the diagnosis along with symptoms and other tests.
- Menopause or early menopause - Low AMH levels may suggest that menopause is approaching or has already occurred.
- Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) - Before IVF, an AMH test helps predict the risk of OHSS, which is a medical emergency, and allows your doctor to adjust the fertility medication dose to improve safety.
- Granulosa cell tumour of the ovary - AMH may be used to monitor treatment response and detect recurrence.
- Future fertility in women undergoing chemotherapy for cancer - To assess the effect of certain cancer treatments on ovarian reserve and future fertility of girls and young women undergoing chemotherapy or radiation therapy.
- Undescended testicles in male infants - The test helps determine whether healthy testicular tissue is present.
- Certain disorders of reproductive development - In infants, children, and adults with differences in reproductive development, AMH testing may help identify the underlying cause along with other investigations.
Note - The diagnosis depends on your symptoms, reproductive organs, age, and medical history, and should only be done by a medical practitioner.
AMH Test Preparation
What to Expect Before the AMH Test
- The AMH test may be done at any time of the day. You may eat and drink normally before the test.
- Let your physician know about all medications and supplements you are taking, and whether you are on contraceptive pills or devices, as the results will be interpreted accordingly.
- You can undergo the test irrespective of the day of your menstrual cycle.
What to Expect During the Blood Collection
- A trained phlebotomist from PharmEasy will arrive at your home at the scheduled time.
- They will take a blood sample from a vein in your arm, using a small needle.
- After the needle is inserted, a small amount of blood will be collected into a test tube or vial. You may feel a little sting when the needle goes in or out. This usually takes less than five minutes.
What to Expect After the Anti-Mullerian Hormone (AMH) Test
- Mild throbbing may be felt at the blood collection site after the blood is drawn, which will get better in a few minutes.
- Occasionally, you may feel dizzy, in which case you may lie down for a while until the feeling passes.
Note - If you notice anything unusual at the puncture site, such as persistent bleeding, a rash, or pain, consult your healthcare provider.
What Are the Parameters Included in the AMH Test?
This test measures a single key parameter related to reproductive health:
- Anti-müllerian hormone (AMH)

- There may be variation in AMH results across different laboratories due to differences in testing methods and reference ranges. When comparing AMH levels over time, results from the same laboratory may provide better consistency, as inter-laboratory differences can affect comparability.

AMH Test Risks and Limitations
Potential Risks and Complications
- The AMH test is generally safe and involves minimal risk.
- Mild discomfort, slight bleeding or bruising at the blood collection site, dizziness, or light-headedness may occasionally occur.
- In rare cases, there may be difficulty locating a vein or a small risk of infection.
Understanding AMH Test Limitations
- The AMH test estimates ovarian reserve (the approximate number of eggs remaining) but does not provide information about egg quality. Therefore, a normal AMH level does not guarantee natural conception or the success of fertility treatments such as IVF.
- Although low AMH levels may suggest reduced ovarian reserve during the menopausal transition, they cannot accurately predict when menopause will occur.
- Hormonal contraceptives, including birth control pills, patches, and certain contraceptive devices, may influence AMH levels. Your doctor will consider this while interpreting the test results.
- An AMH test alone is not sufficient to diagnose most reproductive conditions. Additional tests, such as an antral follicle count (AFC), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) levels, and other clinical assessments, may be needed for a complete evaluation.
