Test Necessity

Test Necessity

The AMH test is done to check female infertility. The testing is used for:

  • Determining the number of eggs left in the ovary. The ovarian reserve typically reduces with age
  • Determining how well the woman will respond to fertility treatment
  • Determining the dosage of fertility medication needed to get optimum results

The test is also done to get an idea of the following:

  • Menopause. Around menopause, the egg supply reduces, and the AMH levels drop
  • Detects ovarian problems that can cause elevated AMH levels. High AMH levels could mean ovarian cancer or PCOS.

The doctor might prescribe the AMH test for men to check the testicular functions. If the man is undergoing treatment for testicular dysfunction, the test has to be repeated every 3 months to check the effectiveness of the same.

Test Preparation

Test Preparation

No precautions or preparations have to be done before the AMH test. However, care should be taken that women are not on birth control medication for at least 1-2 months before taking the AMH test.

During the AMH Test

A phlebotomist will be assigned to you once the AMH test has been booked. They arrive at the specified location at the specified time, to collect the sample, and use new sterilised needles and gloves. The phlebotomists use the vein finder device to identify the ideal vein to draw blood from. The blood sample is stored in barcoded vials and kept in cooling containers till they reach the laboratory for analysis.

Test Result Interpretation

Test Result Interpretation

  • In infant (male)

Low amounts of AMH in a male child may suggest a problem with the AMH gene on chromosome 19. This chromosome controls AMH production and is associated with malfunctioning testicles. Male hormone deficiency can induce ambiguous genitalia and abnormal reproductive organs.
