Know More About The Test
A quick info on AMH test
Overview
The anti‑müllerian hormone (AMH) test is a blood investigation primarily used to evaluate ovarian reserve, that is, the approximate number of eggs a woman is expected to have remaining. It is frequently employed in fertility work‑ups, particularly when a woman is experiencing difficulty conceiving or is considering assisted reproductive techniques such as in vitro fertilisation (IVF).
AMH is secreted by small ovarian follicles, so measuring its level provides an estimate of ovarian activity and how the ovaries might respond to fertility medications. Although a low AMH value can indicate reduced ovarian reserve, it does not, on its own, determine whether pregnancy can occur, nor does it reflect egg quality. The test can also assist clinicians in investigating reasons for irregular menstrual cycles, supporting fertility counselling, and offering insight into the likely timing of menopause. Elevated AMH levels are often observed in conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). In certain situations, it is used in the assessment of specific ovarian tumours. Additionally, it is utilised in boys and men to evaluate testicular function and selected disorders of sexual development.
A key benefit of the AMH test is that it can be performed on any day of the menstrual cycle. It involves a routine blood sample and typically does not require fasting. The AMH test is a valuable marker for supporting assessment of fertility potential, but its interpretation should be done in conjunction with age, clinical symptoms, ultrasound findings, and other hormonal investigations.
When and Who Should Get a AMH Test Done?
Your doctor may recommend an AMH (Anti-Müllerian Hormone) test if you:
- Are having difficulty conceiving and need an assessment of your ovarian reserve.
- Are planning IVF or other fertility treatments to help estimate how your ovaries may respond to stimulation.
- I wish to delay pregnancy and want to understand your current ovarian reserve as part of fertility planning.
- Have symptoms suggestive of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), such as irregular periods, acne, excess facial or body hair, scalp hair thinning, or unexplained weight gain.
- Are suspected to have a reduced ovarian reserve or an early decline in ovarian function.
- Need monitoring for certain ovarian tumours, such as granulosa cell tumours.
- Are evaluating undescended testes in a male infant or child.
- Need assessment for differences in reproductive development in an infant or child.
- Are a girl or young woman undergoing or planning chemotherapy or other cancer treatments that may affect future fertility.
Note - The need for an AMH test depends on your symptoms, reproductive organs, age, and medical history. Your doctor will recommend the test if it is appropriate for your clinical condition.
What Conditions Can an AMH Test Help Detect?
The AMH (anti-müllerian hormone) test is not a standalone diagnostic test. It is interpreted along with your symptoms, medical history, and other investigations to help evaluate or monitor the following conditions:
- Reduced ovarian reserve - Helps estimate whether the number of eggs remaining in the ovaries is lower than expected for your age and predicts how your ovaries may respond to fertility treatments such as IVF.
- Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) - Higher AMH levels may support the diagnosis when interpreted alongside your symptoms, examination findings, and other tests.
- Approaching menopause or premature ovarian insufficiency - Low AMH levels may indicate a decline in ovarian reserve and can help assess reduced ovarian function. However, AMH alone cannot predict exactly when menopause will occur.
- Risk of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) - Before IVF, AMH helps estimate the risk of OHSS, allowing your doctor to adjust fertility medication doses and improve treatment safety.
- Granulosa cell tumour of the ovary - AMH may be used to monitor response to treatment and detect recurrence after treatment.
- Effect of cancer treatment on fertility - In girls and young women receiving chemotherapy or radiation therapy, AMH can help assess the potential impact of treatment on ovarian reserve and future fertility.
- Undescended testes in male infants - Helps determine whether functioning testicular tissue is present.
- Differences in reproductive development - In infants, children, and adults, AMH testing may help evaluate certain disorders of reproductive development when interpreted with other clinical findings and investigations.
Note - The diagnosis depends on your symptoms, reproductive organs, age, and medical history and should only be done by a medical practitioner.
AMH Test Preparation
What to Expect Before the AMH Test
- Fasting is not required for this test. However, if done along with other tests, 8 to 10 hours of fasting may be advised.
- Let your doctor know about all medications, over-the-counter drugs, and supplements you are taking and whether you have any underlying medical conditions. This includes contraceptive pills or devices, as the results will be interpreted accordingly. Do not stop taking any prescribed medication unless advised by your doctor.
- This test can be done on any day of your menstrual cycle, and even if you are menstruating.
What to Expect During the Blood Collection
- A trained phlebotomist will clean the blood collection site with an antiseptic solution and draw a small blood sample from a vein, usually on the inner side of the arm, using a sterile needle.
- The sample is then collected in a labelled tube for laboratory analysis.
- You may experience a brief pinching or stinging sensation during needle insertion or removal.
- The blood collection process is quick and typically completed within a few minutes.
What to Expect After the Anti-Mullerian Hormone (AMH) Test
- Sometimes, you may experience mild soreness, bruising, or a slight throbbing sensation at the blood collection site after the procedure.
- These are usually temporary and resolve on their own.
- If you feel dizzy or light-headed, you may lie down for a while until the feeling passes.
- The collected blood sample is sent to a laboratory. Once the analysis is complete, the test report can be viewed and downloaded through PharmEasy’s online platform.
Note - If you notice anything unusual at the puncture site, such as persistent bleeding, a rash, or pain, consult your healthcare provider.
What Are the Parameters Included in the AMH Test?
This test measures a single key parameter related to reproductive health:
- Anti-müllerian hormone (AMH)

- There may be variation in AMH results across different laboratories due to differences in testing methods and reference ranges. When comparing AMH levels over time, results from the same laboratory may provide better consistency, as inter-laboratory differences can affect comparability.

AMH Test Risks and Limitations
Potential Risks and Complications
Most individuals experience only mild discomfort during blood sample collection. Medical advice should be sought if:
- Bleeding from the blood collection site persists despite applying gentle pressure.
- Significant redness, swelling, warmth, or persistent pain develops around the puncture site.
- Dizziness or light-headedness continues for an extended period after the blood sample collection.
Understanding AMH Test Limitations
- The AMH test indicates ovarian reserve, but it cannot tell whether someone will be able to conceive spontaneously.
- It does not assess egg quality, which is another important factor in fertility.
- Values may differ slightly across different laboratories and testing platforms.
- A low AMH result does not necessarily mean a person is infertile, and a normal result does not ensure that pregnancy will occur.
- The result should be considered together with age, clinical symptoms, ultrasound findings, and other hormone tests.
- On its own, it is not very useful for pinpointing the exact reason for infertility.
AMH Test Price in Ahmedabad
