Overview

Overview

A diagnostic ultrasound, also known as ultrasound scanning, sonography, or ultrasonography, is a non-invasive imaging test that uses high-frequency sound waves to create real-time images of internal organs and soft tissues. The resulting image is called a sonogram. This test enables healthcare providers to view internal structures such as the abdomen, kidneys, gallbladder, and spleen, to check for abnormalities or assess how they are functioning, without using radiation. Diagnostic ultrasound is commonly recommended to evaluate conditions such as gallstones, kidney or bladder stones, blood clots, enlarged organs, abnormal growths, and blocked blood vessels. During the test, a sonographer applies a water-based gel to the skin and glides a handheld probe, called a transducer, over the area being examined. The probe sends sound waves into the body, which bounce back and are converted into images displayed on a screen. For some types of ultrasound, a covered and lubricated transducer may be gently inserted into the vagina or rectum to obtain clearer images of certain internal organs.

The test is generally painless when performed externally, though internal ultrasounds may cause mild discomfort. Preparation varies depending on the area being scanned. Some ultrasounds require a full bladder, some require fasting, while others require no special preparation. The procedure typically takes 30 to 60 minutes.

Your diagnostic ultrasound can be booked on PharmEasy. Choose a diagnostic centre, select a convenient slot, get the scan done by trained sonographers using advanced equipment, and receive your digital report reviewed by experts on the app once it is ready.

People Also Ask

Is a diagnostic ultrasound safe for regular use?

Yes, diagnostic ultrasound is generally considered safe when performed appropriately by a trained professional.

Do I need to remove jewellery or clothing before the test?

Depending on the area being scanned, you may be asked to remove certain clothing or jewellery, or change into a hospital gown.

Can ultrasound detect cancer?

Yes, ultrasound can help identify abnormal growths or masses that may require further evaluation. However, additional tests are usually needed to confirm whether a growth is cancerous.

Can ultrasound detect blood clots?

Yes, ultrasound is commonly used to detect blood clots, particularly in the legs, by visualising blood flow through vessels.

Is fasting required before an abdominal ultrasound?

Yes, fasting may be required before certain abdominal ultrasounds, as food and gas can interfere with image clarity. Follow the preparation instructions provided for your specific scan.

Why might I need a full bladder before a pelvic ultrasound?

A full bladder helps push the intestines out of the way, providing a clearer view of the pelvic organs during the scan.

Are internal ultrasounds uncomfortable?

Internal ultrasounds may cause mild discomfort or pressure, but they generally should not be painful.

Can ultrasound detect gallstones?

Yes, ultrasound is one of the most reliable and commonly used methods for detecting gallstones and related gallbladder conditions.

Who performs an ultrasound test?

A doctor or a trained healthcare professional known as a sonographer or ultrasound technologist performs the test, while a radiologist or another qualified doctor interprets the images.

Does an ultrasound involve any exposure to radiation?

No, ultrasound uses sound waves rather than radiation, making it a safer alternative to imaging tests such as X-rays or CT scans for certain evaluations.
