Know More About The Test
Overview
A diagnostic ultrasound, also known as ultrasound scanning, sonography, or ultrasonography, is a non-invasive imaging test that uses high-frequency sound waves to create real-time images of internal organs and soft tissues. The resulting image is called a sonogram. This test enables healthcare providers to view internal structures such as the abdomen, kidneys, gallbladder, and spleen, to check for abnormalities or assess how they are functioning, without using radiation. Diagnostic ultrasound is commonly recommended to evaluate conditions such as gallstones, kidney or bladder stones, blood clots, enlarged organs, abnormal growths, and blocked blood vessels. During the test, a sonographer applies a water-based gel to the skin and glides a handheld probe, called a transducer, over the area being examined. The probe sends sound waves into the body, which bounce back and are converted into images displayed on a screen. For some types of ultrasound, a covered and lubricated transducer may be gently inserted into the vagina or rectum to obtain clearer images of certain internal organs.
The test is generally painless when performed externally, though internal ultrasounds may cause mild discomfort. Preparation varies depending on the area being scanned. Some ultrasounds require a full bladder, some require fasting, while others require no special preparation. The procedure typically takes 30 to 60 minutes.
Your diagnostic ultrasound can be booked on PharmEasy. Choose a diagnostic centre, select a convenient slot, get the scan done by trained sonographers using advanced equipment, and receive your digital report reviewed by experts on the app once it is ready.
