  • Summary
The D-Dimer Test measures the level of D-dimer, a substance in the blood that forms when blood clots break down. It helps check for abnormal blood clotting conditions like deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism. The test is often advised for symptoms such as chest pain, breathlessness, or sudden swelling. It uses a blood sample, does not require fasting, and is suitable for adults as advised by a doctor.Read more

A quick info on D-Dimer test

A quick info on D-Dimer test

Overview

Overview

When a blood vessel is damaged in the body during injury, the body activates a natural mechanism called hemostasis to control bleeding and promote healing. As part of this process, a protein called fibrin forms a mesh-like structure that works with platelets to create a stable blood clot at the site of injury.

After healing is complete, the body gradually dissolves the clot and clears it from the bloodstream. During this breakdown process, several fibrin degradation products are released, including D-dimer. The D-dimer test measures the amount of this protein fragment in the blood.

In certain clotting disorders, blood clots may develop without an obvious injury or may fail to break down normally. As a result, D-dimer levels can increase due to ongoing clot formation and degradation. Elevated D-dimer levels may therefore indicate abnormal clotting activity and can help healthcare providers assess the likelihood of an underlying thrombotic condition.

When and Who Should Get a D-Dimer Test?

When and Who Should Get a D-Dimer Test?

A D-dimer test is commonly performed in hospitals or emergency care settings when a blood clotting disorderis suspected. If recommended in a non-emergency situation, the test can be scheduled with PharmEasy and you can avail of the home sample collection service.

  • The test may be advised for individuals experiencing symptoms of deep vein thrombosis (DVT), such as swelling, pain, tenderness, warmth, or discolouration in an arm or leg.
  • It may be recommended when symptoms of pulmonary embolism (PE) are present, including sudden breathlessness, chest pain, a rapid heartbeat, dizziness, or coughing up blood.
  • In cases of suspected disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC), symptoms may include abnormal bleeding, discolouration of the skin, severe pain, nausea, memory loss, confusion, seizures, fever, and decreased urine output.
  • A D-dimer test may form part of the evaluation for stroke, when symptoms such as sudden weakness, facial drooping, speech difficulties, vision changes, severe headache, or loss of balance occur.
  • The test may also be used to assess clotting abnormalities following bites from certain venomous snakes, particularly vipers.

Because these conditions can be medical emergencies, prompt medical attention is recommended if symptoms occur.

  • To check how long blood thinners (anticoagulant medicines) are needed for people being treated for a blood clot.
How Frequently Should You Take the D-Dimer Test?

How Frequently Should You Take the D-Dimer Test?

  • The D-dimer test is not typically performed on a regular schedule. It is usually ordered when there is a clinical suspicion of a blood clotting disorder or to monitor treatment and disease progression in patients with known clotting conditions.
What Conditions Can a D-Dimer Test Help Detect?

What Conditions Can a D-Dimer Test Help Detect?

  • Deep vein thrombosis (DVT)
  • Pulmonary embolism (PE)
  • Disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC)
  • Stroke
  • Snake bites of certain snakes

D-Dimer Test Preparation

D-Dimer Test Preparation

No special preparation is needed for a D-dimer test unless other tests are being done at the same time.

What to Expect Before the Test

  • This test can be done at any time of the day, irrespective of fasting status.

What to Expect During the Sample Collection

  • The D-dimer test requires a small blood sample, which is usually collected from a vein in the arm by a phlebotomist.
  • A sterile needle is used to draw blood into collection tubes for laboratory analysis.
  • If an intravenous (IV) line is already in place, the blood sample may sometimes be collected through the existing line instead of a new needle insertion.

What to Expect After the Test

  • A slight pain or a sting may be felt when the needle is inserted. Mild throbbing at the site may also be felt after the blood is drawn.

Note: If you notice anything unusual at the puncture site, such as persistent bleeding, a rash, or pain, consult your healthcare provider.

What Are the Parameters Included in the D-Dimer Test?

What Are the Parameters Included in the D-Dimer Test?

The D-dimer test measures a single key parameter:

  • D-dimer level - measured in μg/mL FEU or ng/mL (nanograms per millilitre).
  • D-dimer is a protein particle produced when the body breaks down blood clots. Increased D-dimer levels may indicate that clot formation and clot breakdown are taking place within the body.
Normal Range and Interpretation of D-Dimer Test Parameters

Normal Range and Interpretation of D-Dimer Test Parameters

D-Dimer Level

Result category

Interpretation

Below 1.00 μg/mL FEU

Normal

No significant blood clot activity detected.

Above 1.00 μg/mL FEU

Elevated

May indicate increased clot formation and breakdown in the body. Results should be interpreted along with symptoms, medical history, and other diagnostic tests, as elevated levels can also occur in conditions such as infection, inflammation, pregnancy, recent surgery, or liver disease.

Important note: Normal D-dimer ranges vary between laboratories and assay methods. Age-adjusted thresholds (age x 10 ng/mL for patients above 50 years) are used in some clinical guidelines. Pregnancy is associated with progressively rising D-dimer throughout all trimesters. Always refer to the ranges on your specific report and consult your doctor for interpretation.

D-Dimer Test Risks and Limitations

D-Dimer Test Risks and Limitations

Potential Risks and Complications

There are minimal risks associated with having blood drawn for the D-dimer test which may occur rarely:

  • Feeling light-headed
  • Risk of bruising
  • Minor bleeding
  • Infection
  • Difficulty in finding a vein

Understanding D-Dimer Test Limitations

  • Higher levels of D-dimer may also be present in conditions other than blood clotting disorders, such as pregnancy, infections, heart disease, rheumatoid arthritis, liver disease, old age, immobility, or if you have undergone a surgery recently.
  • Blood thinning medications may reduce the levels of D-dimer in the body and mask the presence of clotting disorders.
  • The test can only determine the presence of abnormal clotting in the body, not determine the location or size of a blood clot.

Note: Always consult a doctor before ordering or interpreting a D-dimer test. Never make treatment decisions based on D-dimer alone.
