The white blood cells of our body's immune system make antibodies, which help us stay healthy by warding off infections caused by pathogens, such as bacteria, viruses, and fungi. Sometimes, antibodies target normal healthy cells of our body by mistake, which can trigger inflammation that leads to joint or tissue damage. Your body may produce antibodies even when there is no need for them, and they target the healthy cells because there are no invaders to destroy. They are termed auto antibodies. Some such antibodies specifically attack and destroy the nuclei of cells. They are called antinuclear antibodies. These ANA cause widespread inflammation and are often accompanied by joint swelling and pain. These antibodies are called autoantibodies.
