Our immune system produces antibodies  (which are proteins) to protect us from infections and diseases caused by pathogens like viruses and bacteria. Antinuclear antibodies are also produced by the immune system. Sometimes the antibodies mistake healthy body cells as foreign bodies and start attacking them. They are called anti-nuclear antibodies because they target the nucleus of the cells in particular.

A very small amount of ANA is normal in the human body. However, having too many antinuclear antibodies in the blood leads to malfunctioning of the immune system, which can cause a variety of health problems.

A negative ANA means the person is less likely to have an autoimmune disorder. Whereas a positive ANA result means antinuclear antibodies are present in the blood. ANAs are associated  with autoimmune diseases such as:

During the ANA Test
