Our immune system produces antibodies  (which are proteins) to protect us from infections and diseases caused by pathogens like viruses and bacteria. Antinuclear antibodies are also produced by the immune system. Sometimes the antibodies mistake healthy body cells as foreign bodies and start attacking them.
