Know More About The Test
A quick info on Urine Routine Test
Overview
A urine routine test is a commonly advised test that examines the urine physically, chemically, and microscopically. The body produces urine as a waste fluid after the kidneys filter blood and remove excess water, salts, and waste products. Urine composition gives a picture of how well the kidneys and the body as a whole are functioning. The urine test is usually recommended during routine preventive screenings, as part of prenatal tests in pregnancy, when urinary tract infection or kidney disease is suspected, for screening before surgery, in liver disorders, diabetes, or other metabolic conditions. It is also advised to monitor already diagnosed conditions and treatment progression. The urine routine test is broadly divided into three parts: a physical analysis of the urine’s appearance and other aspects, a dipstick analysis that checks for glucose, protein, blood, and other substances, and a microscopic analysis to check for cells, crystals, or bacteria. The urine routine test is an invaluable tool in the evaluation of the health of the urinary system as well as the whole body. The process of sample collection for this test is simple; it just requires collection of a small sample of urine in a sterile container that is provided by our lab executive. This test is also known as a urinalysis or complete urine examination.
When and Who Should Get a Urine Routine Test?
The urine routine test is advised if you experience the following symptoms:
- Pain or burning sensation while urinating
- Frequent or urgent need to urinate
- Cloudy, dark, or foul-smelling urine
- Blood in the urine
- Lower abdominal or backache
- Unexplained tiredness or swelling in the legs, ankles, or face
- Fever
It is also recommended in cases of:
- Urinary tract infections (UTIs)
- Kidney disease or kidney stones
- Diabetes or uncontrolled blood sugar levels
- Liver disorders, including jaundice
- High blood pressure
- Pregnancy (as part of routine prenatal care)
Doctors often include a urinalysis in:
- Routine health check-ups
- Pre-surgical evaluations
- Monitoring existing conditions such as diabetes or kidney disease
- If you are on medications that may affect kidney function
What Conditions Can a Urine Routine Test Help Detect?
The urine test is usually used along with investigation of symptoms, medical history, and other tests to support diagnosis and monitor various health conditions such as:
- Urinary tract infections (UTIs)
- Kidney diseases
- Kidney stones
- Diabetes
- Liver disorders
- Dehydration
- Proteinuria (protein in urine)
- Haematuria (blood in urine)
- Pregnancy-related complications (such as pre-eclampsia)
- Bladder or urinary system disorders
- Metabolic and systemic disorders
Urine Routine Test Preparation
What to Expect Before the Urine Routine Test
- Follow your regular amount of water intake before the test. Do not drink large amounts of water, as it may dilute your urine and skew the results.
- Inform your physician regarding all medicines, supplements, or vitamins (such as vitamin C) that you are currently taking, as these can affect test results. Do not stop any medication without consulting your physician.
- Vigorous exercise before the test may temporarily alter certain parameters.
- You may sometimes be asked to provide a first-morning urine sample for testing, as it is more concentrated.
- If you are menstruating, let your physician know, as blood can interfere with results. You may be asked to give the sample at a later date or take extra precautions during sample collection.
What to Expect During the Sample Collection
- A clean and sterile container will be provided for the sample collection.
- Clean-catch method: clean the genital area with an antiseptic wipe.
- Midstream collection: start urinating into the toilet, after a few seconds, collect a midstream urine sample into the container. This helps reduce contamination from the initial stream.
- Around 30-60 ml, that is, about halfway or more of the container is needed for testing.
- Once the required amount of urine has been collected, close the container properly. You can give the sample to the PharmEasy sample collection executive. They will enter your details on the container.
What to Expect After the Urine Routine Test
- There is no recovery period for this test; you may start your routine activities, diet, and medicines soon after the test.
- Once the sample analysis is complete, reports are uploaded to the PharmEasy platform. This takes a few hours to a day.
- After reviewing the results, your doctor may advise further tests such as urine culture, blood tests, or imaging.
- In case the result is inconclusive due to contamination, you may have to provide another sample.

Urine Routine Test Risks and Limitations
Potential Risks and Complications
- This test involves a simple urine sample collection and does not have any risks.
- Some people may feel uncomfortable with giving a urine sample. With PharmEasy’s home sample collection option, you can collect your sample in the privacy and comfort of your home.
Understanding Urine Routine Test Limitations
- The urine test cannot confirm the underlying cause; it can only detect abnormalities in urine. Your doctor will interpret the results along with your symptoms, medical history, and further investigations such as urine culture, imaging and other specialised tests.
- If the sample is not collected properly and hygienically, contamination may occur, affecting the results.
- Having lots of water before the test can dilute urine and affect test accuracy.
- Menstrual blood, certain medicines, and supplements can alter certain parameters.
- Some substances may show up erratically in the urine, so a single test might miss on these.
