Kidneys are the internal organs of the urinary system. They are located in the back of the abdomen, just below the ribcage. The primary function of the kidneys is to filter the blood. They remove toxins, waste products and excess water out of the blood, which leaves the body as urine. The waste products include nitrogen waste (urea), muscle waste (creatinine), and acids.

The kidneys also maintain the balance of fluid (mostly water) and electrolytes in the body. Electrolytes are essential minerals (such as sodium, potassium, chloride, etc.) which are needed for body functioning.

The kidneys are also vital for producing:

• Erythropoietin (EPO),  a hormone that stimulates the bone marrow to produce red blood cells
• Calcitriol, the active form of vitamin D
• Renin, an enzyme that regulates the blood pressure

The Kidney Function test consists of the following tests:

• Creatinine: Creatinine is a waste product produced by the muscles that gets filtered out by the kidneys. This test measures how well the kidneys are performing their job
• Calcium: Abnormal levels of calcium may be a sign of bone disease, thyroid disease, kidney disease, etc.
• Uric acid: Too much uric acid causes gout and may be a sign of kidney stone
• Blood urea nitrogen or serum urea: A high BUN level may be a sign that the kidneys are not functioning well. Abnormally low levels can signify malnutrition, lack of protein, and liver disease
• Urea (calculated): urea is a naturally occurring molecule, a waste product produced by protein metabolism found abundantly in urine
• eGFR: estimated glomerular filtration rate based on a person's age, sex, and body type. A very low result may indicate severe kidney failure
• BUN to creatinine ratio
• Urea to creatinine ratio

The doctor may order a KFT to see if your kidneys are working as well as they should. These tests are part of your routine health checkup. You may also need a kidney function test if you notice these symptoms:
