Typhoid fever is a life threatening infection caused by the bacteria salmonella typhi. It is usually spread through food or water contaminated with the bacteria. Once the salmonella typhi bacteria are ingested, they enter the intestine and then multiply and spread into the bloodstream. The infection can spread throughout the body, affecting many organs like lymph  nodes, gallbladder, liver, spleen and many other parts of the body. Without prompt treatment it can cause serious complications and can be fatal.

Typhoid fever is highly contagious. Persons with typhoid fever carry the bacteria in their blood and intestinal tract. Salmonella typhi bacteria are passed out of the body through the stool or sometimes urine of an infected person. If a healthy person eats food or drinks water that has been contaminated with a small amount of faecal matter they become infected with the bacteria and develop typhoid fever.

Some people become long term carriers of S typhi, and continue to be contagious with typhoid fever even after recovery. They do not show any symptoms, but can release the bacteria in their stools (sometimes for years), spreading the typhoid fever.

Typhoid fever is not spread by sneezing or coughing. You can get typhoid fever if you-

• Eat food and drink water (or a beverage) that has been touched by a person with typhoid and has not washed their hands thoroughly after using the toilet.
• Eat raw fruits or vegetables that have been washed in contaminated water.

With treatment the symptoms of typhoid fever should quickly improve in 3 to 5 days. Left untreated, it will get worse over the course of a few weeks.

Some measures to be taken to avoid S typhi infections are as follow:

• Wash hands frequently with soapy water before eating or preparing food, as well  as after using the toilet
• Avoid drinking untreated water
• Eat foods that have been thoroughly cooked and avoid foods that have been stored in room temperature
• Peel or wash fruits or raw vegetables in clean water before eating them

Getting vaccinated is the best way to avoid getting infected with typhoid bacteria.

Doctors may recommend a widal test if a person shows the symptoms of typhoid fever which includes:

• High fever
• Weak feelings
• Severe fatigue
• Chills
• Abdominal pain, muscle pain, headache
• Diarrhoea or constipation
• Bloody stools
• Rashes
• Agitation, confusion, delirium, hallucination

Fasting or any other preparation is not required for a widal test.

During the Widal Test
