A quick info on SGOT test

A quick info on SGOT test

Overview

Overview

The SGOT test is a blood test that measures the level of aspartate aminotransferase (AST) in your blood. It is also known as the serum glutamic-oxaloacetic transaminase test or the AST test. The AST is an enzyme that helps the body process proteins from food and use nutrients to produce energy. It is present in several tissues, particularly the liver, heart, and skeletal muscles, as well as the kidneys, brain, and red blood cells. AST normally remains inside cells. When these cells are damaged, AST can be released into the bloodstream, causing its levels in the blood to rise. Although SGOT is commonly used as part of liver function testing, it is not specific to the liver. Increased levels can occur with liver injury or inflammation, but may also result from muscle damage, strenuous exercise, heart-related injury, and other conditions.

Doctors may recommend an SGOT test when evaluating possible liver or tissue injury. The result is usually assessed along with other tests, such as SGPT (ALT), bilirubin, and alkaline phosphatase (ALP), as well as your symptoms, medical history, and physical examination.

When and Who Should Get a SGOT Test Done?

When and Who Should Get a SGOT Test Done?

Your doctor may recommend an SGOT test in the following situations:

  • Routine health check-up: As part of a routine health check-up or to assess overall liver health.
  • Monitoring: To monitor an existing liver condition or response to treatment.
  • Symptoms: If you have symptoms that may suggest liver or other tissue injury, such as nausea, loss of appetite, fatigue, weakness, yellowing of the skin or eyes, abdominal pain or swelling, dark urine, pale stools, or persistent itching.
  • Risk factors: If you have a higher risk of liver disease such as a family history of liver disease, regular or excessive alcohol use, obesity, diabetes, or hepatitis.
  • Medications: If you take medicines that may affect the liver, your doctor may recommend periodic liver enzyme testing.
  • Hepatitis related check-ups: If you have a history of hepatitis or possible exposure to hepatitis, testing may be advised as part of your evaluation.

Note: SGOT is not specific to the liver, so your doctor may recommend it along with other liver tests depending on your symptoms and medical history.

What Causes Abnormal SGOT (AST) Levels?

What Causes Abnormal SGOT (AST) Levels?

High levels of SGOT in the blood may be due to:

  • Liver conditions: Fatty liver disease, viral hepatitis, alcohol-related liver disease, cirrhosis, and other conditions that cause liver inflammation or damage.
  • Heart-related problems: Heart attack or other conditions causing heart muscle injury.
  • Muscle injury: Severe muscle damage, strenuous exercise, or conditions such as rhabdomyolysis.
  • Pancreatitis: Inflammation of the pancreas.
  • Haemochromatosis: A condition in which excess iron builds up in the body and can damage the liver.
  • Mononucleosis: A viral infection that can temporarily raise liver enzymes.
  • Severe burns or seizures: These can cause tissue or muscle injury, leading to increased SGOT.
  • Medicines or substances: Certain medicines and substances can injure the liver, including excessive alcohol use.
  • Surgery: SGOT may temporarily increase after certain surgical procedures due to tissue injury.

Low levels of SGOT in the blood are usually considered normal. Very rarely, it may be associated with:

  • Vitamin B6 deficiency
  • Certain kidney-related conditions and renal dialysis
  • Pregnancy

Note: If your results are not in the normal range, it does not always mean that you have a medical condition that needs treatment. Many things can affect your results, such as pregnancy, exercise, certain medicines, and your age or sex. Talk with your doctor to learn what your results mean. The above list is for educational purposes only and does not confirm a diagnosis or the presence of any condition.

SGOT Test Preparation

SGOT Test Preparation

What to Expect Before the Test?

  • Tell your doctor about all prescription medicines, over-the-counter medicines, and dietary supplements you take regularly. Also inform them about any ongoing medical conditions and pregnancy status, if relevant.
  • Avoid strenuous exercise for 48 hours before the test. Intense physical activity can temporarily increase SGOT because the enzyme is also present in skeletal muscles. Normal daily activities and light exercise generally do not need to be stopped. If someone has had muscle injury or a heavy workout recently, it is worth informing the doctor because it can affect interpretation.
  • Avoid alcohol for at least 24 hours before the test. Alcohol can increase SGOT levels, particularly with regular or heavy alcohol use. If you regularly consume alcohol or drink heavily, inform your doctor, as this can affect the interpretation of your results.
  • SGOT testing usually does not require fasting, unless you are having other blood tests at the same time that require fasting.

What to Expect During the Sample Collection?

  • A phlebotomist will arrive at your home for sample collection.
  • An elastic band will be placed around your arm, and you may be asked to make a fist. Using a sterile needle, a small blood sample will be drawn from a vein in your arm, and you may be advised to apply gentle pressure at the blood draw site using a cotton swab.
  • The procedure usually takes only a few minutes.

What to Expect After the Test?

  • The sample will then be taken to the lab to be analysed. Your test results should be available within a few hours, and you can access them through the PharmEasy platform.

Note: If you notice anything unusual at the puncture site, such as persistent bleeding, a rash, or pain, consult your healthcare provider.

What Are the Parameters Included in the SGOT Test?

What Are the Parameters Included in the SGOT Test?

The SGOT test measures a single key parameter:

  • SGOT (aspartate aminotransferase), reported in units per litre (U/L).
Normal Range of SGOT Test Parameters

Normal Range of SGOT Test Parameters

The table below shows standard reference ranges of SGOT levels.

Parameter

Normal range

SGOT (aspartate aminotransferase)

Less than 35 U/L (units per litre)

Important note: SGOT (AST) levels may vary with age, sex, and muscle mass, as SGOT is also present in skeletal and cardiac muscle. Levels can also be higher in newborns and young children than in adults. Normal ranges may differ slightly between laboratories. Always refer to the reference range provided on your specific lab report and consult your doctor for a personalised interpretation.

SGOT Test Result Interpretation

SGOT Test Result Interpretation

SGOT results must always be interpreted in the context of your gender, symptoms, alcohol use, medications, and the degree of elevation.

SGOT (AST) result

What it may mean

Very low

Usually not a cause for concern and may simply represent normal variation. Rarely, very low levels may be associated with vitamin B6 deficiency or certain kidney-related conditions.

Normal (<35 U/L)

Generally considered within the reference range. However, SGOT should be interpreted along with other liver tests and clinical findings.

Mildly elevated

May occur with mild liver injury, alcohol use, certain medicines, strenuous exercise, or muscle injury. A small increase does not necessarily indicate significant liver disease.

Moderately elevated

May be associated with liver inflammation or injury, such as hepatitis or fatty liver disease. Muscle or heart-related injury can also increase SGOT.

Markedly elevated

Can occur with significant liver or other tissue injury, including severe hepatitis, reduced blood flow to the liver, major muscle injury, or certain heart-related conditions. Further evaluation is needed to determine the cause.

Important: SGOT (AST) is found not only in the liver but also in the heart, skeletal muscles, kidneys, brain, and blood cells. Therefore, an elevated SGOT does not always indicate liver disease. Doctors may interpret it alongside SGPT (ALT), bilirubin, ALP, and other tests, as well as your symptoms and medical history. The above table is for educational purposes only. SGOT interpretation requires the expertise of a healthcare professional.

SGOT Test Risks and Limitations

SGOT Test Risks and Limitations

Potential Risks and Complications

  • The SGOT test is generally safe.
  • Minor risks involved with a blood draw may occasionally occur, such as mild pain, slight bleeding, bruising, dizziness, or light-headedness. Sometimes, vein access may be difficult.

Understanding SGOT Test Limitations

  • Not specific to the liver: SGOT is also found in the heart, skeletal muscles, kidneys, brain, and blood cells, so an elevated result may not always indicate liver disease.
  • Cannot identify the cause on its own: A high SGOT level can occur with several liver and non-liver conditions. Additional tests may be needed to determine the cause.
  • Does not directly measure liver function: SGOT indicates possible cell or tissue injury but does not show how well the liver is functioning.
  • Exercise can affect the result: Strenuous exercise or muscle injury may temporarily increase SGOT levels.
  • A normal result does not completely rule out liver disease: SGOT levels may remain normal in some liver conditions, particularly in certain early or mild cases.
  • Results should be interpreted with other findings: Doctors may assess SGOT along with SGPT/ALT, bilirubin, ALP, and other tests, as well as your symptoms and medical history.

People Also Ask

Do I need to visit a PharmEasy sample collection centre for the SGOT/AST test in Mumbai?

Not required. After booking the SGOT/AST test, the sample will be collected by a trained PharmEasy phlebotomist at the address you have provided for home sample collection in Mumbai.

Where is my SGOT/AST test sample processed after home collection in Mumbai?

Your SGOT/AST test sample is transported to the designated PharmEasy partner laboratory or processing unit in Mumbai for testing, following appropriate sample-handling procedures.

How will I receive my SGOT/AST test report in Mumbai through PharmEasy?

Once your SGOT/AST test report is ready, it can be accessed through your PharmEasy account. Always ensure that your medical reports are interpreted by a healthcare professional.

What is the difference between SGOT and AST?

SGOT and AST refer to the same enzyme. AST is the current medical name, while SGOT is the older name.

Does a high SGOT/AST always mean liver disease?

No. SGOT/AST is also present in muscles, the heart, and other tissues. Muscle injury, strenuous exercise, and certain heart conditions can also raise its levels.

Can exercise affect my SGOT/AST test results?

Yes. Intense exercise can temporarily increase SGOT/AST because the enzyme is present in skeletal muscles. Inform your doctor if you have had strenuous exercise before testing.

What is the difference between SGOT/AST and SGPT/ALT?

Both are enzymes commonly measured when assessing liver health. SGPT/ALT is more specific to the liver, while SGOT/AST is also found in significant amounts in muscles and the heart.
