A quick info on RBS test

A quick info on RBS test

Overview

Overview

Insulin is a hormone produced by the pancreas that helps glucose move from the bloodstream into the body’s cells, where it is used for energy.

In diabetes, the body may not produce enough insulin or may not use it effectively, causing blood glucose levels to rise. Over time, persistently high blood sugar can damage the body and increase the risk of complications such as heart disease, kidney disease, and vision problems. In people with diabetes who take insulin or certain medications to control high blood sugar, delayed or missed meals may sometimes cause blood glucose levels to drop dangerously low. This requires immediate treatment, as it can lead to confusion, loss of consciousness, seizures, or even life-threatening complications.

You can monitor your blood sugar levels easily through blood sugar tests. The random blood sugar test is an efficient tool for detecting abnormal blood glucose levels quickly, as it does not require fasting and can be done at any time of the day.

A balanced diet, regular physical activity, adequate sleep, stress management, and guidance from healthcare professionals can help in the effective management of diabetes.

When and Who Should Get a RBS Test Done?

When and Who Should Get a RBS Test Done?

  • If you have increased thirst, frequent urination, blurred vision, fatigue, and unexplained weight loss, these may be signs of high blood glucose.
  • If you have dizziness, hunger, confusion, headache, or rapid heartbeat, these may be signs of low blood glucose.
  • If you are pregnant, the RBS test is a part of the comprehensive blood glucose panel for screening.
  • If you have been taking medicines like steroids, statins, and antipsychotics for a long time.
  • If you are overweight, have a family history of diabetes, have heart disease, fatty liver disease, polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome, high blood pressure, or high cholesterol levels.
  • If you lead a sedentary lifestyle.
  • If you are above 35 years of age.

The RBS test is used as an initial screening tool for the above conditions, but it may require further testing for confirmation of diabetes.

What to Expect Before the Test

  • Fasting is usually not required for this test, and it can be done at any time of the day. However, noting the time and type of your last meal and drink, and details of regular medications, may help with the interpretation of the results.

What to Expect During the Sample Collection

A trained phlebotomist will arrive at your home at the stipulated time. The following can be expected during the blood sample collection:

  • An elastic band is tied over the upper arm, and you may be asked to make a tight fist.
  • A sterile needle will be inserted into a vein of your inner arm to collect the blood sample.
  • After the needle is removed, you may be asked to apply pressure on the site with a cotton gauze and then a bandage may be placed to stop minor bleeding.

What to Expect After the Test

  • A slight pain or a sting may be felt when the needle is inserted. Mild throbbing at the site may also be felt after the blood is drawn, which will pass in about a minute.
  • Once the sample is analysed in the laboratory, the report will be uploaded to the PharmEasy platform for easy access. The healthcare provider will interpret the results and advise further evaluation or treatment if required.

Note: If you notice anything unusual at the puncture site, such as persistent bleeding, a rash, or pain, consult your healthcare provider.
