Glucose is the fuel for the body. Our body breaks down the carbohydrates we consume into their simplest form- glucose. The pancreas produces a hormone called insulin, which tells the cells to absorb glucose from our blood. But if the cells do not respond to insulin or if there isn't enough insulin, glucose will remain in the blood, and this causes high blood sugar levels.

The RBS test is a useful tool to detect diabetes mellitus. This is an umbrella term that refers to several disorders that involve high blood sugar levels, including:

• Type 1 diabetes: a congenital disorder where the body doesn't produce enough insulin, and hence there is no control over blood sugar levels.
• Type 2 diabetes: a mostly lifestyle disorder that doesn't allow the body's cells to respond to insulin, and as a result, blood sugar level spikes.
• Gestational diabetes: This form of diabetes usually develops around the 24th week of pregnancy.

Though prediabetes is included in diabetes mellitus, the RBS test is not used to detect it. Prediabetes means your blood sugar level is high but not high enough to qualify as diabetes. Your blood sugar level will normally increase during different times of the day without it being caused by prediabetes or diabetes. If the RBS test is done at that time, it too will show high glucose levels, but it doesn't necessarily mean you have diabetes.

If the RBS test shows high levels of blood sugar, you may need follow-up tests like fasting blood sugar tests to help the doctor know for sure if you have diabetes.

You may be asked by your doctor to get an RBS done when you begin to show signs of high blood sugar levels, such as:

During the RBS Test
