The Widal test is a serological test which checks the interactions between antibodies and antigens. The function of the immune system is to make antibodies against invading bacteria or viruses to protect the body from infection. If a person has typhoid fever, their blood sample will contain specific antibodies that are made against the antigens of S. typhi. In this test, if antibodies and antigens clump together, then it will be confirmed that the person has typhoid.

Typhoid fever is usually spread through contaminated food and water. Once this contaminated food or water enters the stomach, Salmonella typhi bacteria multiply and spread into the bloodstream. A person with typhoid infection carries the bacteria in their blood and intestinal tract. These bacteria are passed out of the body through the faeces of the infected person.

Typhoid fever is highly contagious. If someone else ingests food or water that has been contaminated with a small trace of infected faeces, they will become infected and develop typhoid fever. Left untreated, the infection can spread to the lymph nodes, gallbladder, spleen, and many other parts of the body. It can affect the lungs, causing pneumonia, the bones (osteomyelitis), the heart valves (endocarditis), the kidneys (glomerulonephritis), the liver (hepatitis), the urinary tract or the muscles.

Typhoid bacteria can remain in the body even after symptoms go away, and the person can spread the infection to other healthy people. That is why people  who are undergoing treatment for typhoid fever must follow certain measures, which are-

• Take the medicines for as long as your doctor has prescribed
• Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water after using the toilet and avoid preparing and serving food for others.
• Affirm that the typhoid bacteria are no longer in your body through diagnostics (Widal test) and consultations with your doctor.

Typhoid fever spreads rapidly due to a lack of sanitation and limited supply of clean and purified water. If typhoid fever is diagnosed early, the infection can usually be treated at home with a course of antibiotics. If treatment is started as soon as symptoms appear, typhoid fever subsides within 7 to 10 days, avoiding complications.

During the Widal Test
