Homocysteine is an amino acid (a molecule that acts as a building block for protein) present in the body, which is rapidly broken down with the help of vitamin B12, vitamin B6, and folic acid, and converted to other compounds. As a result, the homocysteine levels in the body are usually low. If there is a problem with this mechanism, the blood homocysteine levels become elevated. Consequently, homocysteine can accumulate in the blood vessels, which can lead to blood clot formation and may increase the risk of heart attack, stroke, and blood vessel disorders. Therefore, measuring homocysteine levels using this test can help doctors assess the risk of cardiovascular disease and other related health complications at an early stage.

No fasting is required for a standalone Homocysteine test. You can eat and drink normally. However, if it is part of a broader package that includes fasting tests, your doctor may advise fasting for 8-12 hours. Avoid strenuous exercise for 24 hours before the test, as intense physical activity can temporarily raise homocysteine levels and affect interpretation. Always inform your doctor about any ongoing medications.

What to Expect During the Blood Collection

A phlebotomist cleans the skin with an antiseptic, then places an elastic band around your upper arm to make the veins easier to access. A small needle is inserted into the vein; you may feel a brief pinch. Blood is collected into a labelled tube in under a minute.
