Description
The Complete Vitamin Profile test procedure is a screening and diagnostic package that includes tests for both fat-soluble and water-soluble vitamins to detect vitamin deficiencies or excesses that your body needs to reduce health risks, improve immunity and preserve overall health.
Finding the problem before it develops into something big helps prevent serious damage to the body. The Complete Vitamin Profile includes some necessary tests for checking the blood levels of fat-soluble and water-soluble vitamins in your body. The Complete Vitamin Profile results would help to identify any deficiency or excess of vitamins that can lead to symptoms or conditions which can be hazardous to health.
Vitamins are classified as water-soluble and Fat-soluble vitamins. Fat-soluble vitamins include: Vitamin A, K, D and E. Water-soluble vitamins include Vitamin B-1 (Thiamine), B-2 (Riboflavin), B-3 (Niacin), B-5 (Pantothenic acid), B-6 (Pyridoxine), B-7 (Biotin), B-9 (Folate), B-12 (Cobalamin) and Vitamin C.
Vitamin deficiencies often go clinically unnoticed unless they are severe, but even modest deficiencies can have serious implications. Vitamin deficiencies affect people of all ages and they frequently coexist with mineral deficiencies (zinc, iron and iodine). Because of their comparatively high demands, pregnant and breastfeeding women, as well as small children, are the populations most vulnerable to vitamin deficiencies. Because fat-soluble vitamins can accumulate in the body, they are more prone than water-soluble vitamins to cause toxicity.
Checking for levels of vitamins in the body regularly helps to assess or treat any deficiency or excess of vitamins. The common vitamins that are found deficient include Vitamin D, Vitamin B12 and Vitamin B9.
Vitamin D aids in the absorption of calcium and phosphorus, as well as the maintenance of strong bones and teeth. Vitamin D (25-OH) testing determines the amount of Vitamin D (25-OH) in the blood, which is a good marker of osteoporosis (bone weakness), rickets (a type of bone malformation) and osteomalacia (softening of bones).
Cobalamin is another name for vitamin B12. Vitamin B12 is required for the generation of normal red blood cells, tissue repair, DNA synthesis and cell genetic material. It is not synthesised by the body and must be obtained through food. Red meat, fish, milk, poultry, yoghurt, eggs, fortified cereals, bread and other grain products are all good sources of Vitamin B12. Vitamin B12 tablets or multivitamin pills can also be used. Macrocytic anaemia (size of red blood cells larger than normal) is caused by a lack of Vitamin B12.
Vitamin B9, along with Vitamin B12 and iron, is crucial for the synthesis of red blood cells. It is necessary for nerve function and cell multiplication in the body. It is necessary for the correct development of the foetus's spinal cord in pregnant women. Vitamin B9 deficiency can cause anaemia.
