Description

A widal test is a blood test that is carried out to detect a possible case of enteric fever (typhoid and paratyphoid fever). Enteric fever is caused due to the consumption of contaminated food or water, causing a bacterial infection. Using the slide agglutination method, a Widal test measures the titres (level) of antibodies against enteric fever-causing bacteria. Enteric fever has a slow, gradual onset. The time interval between exposure to an infection to the emergence of first symptoms is usually between 6 to 30 days. The symptoms start with fever and fatigue in the initial days, which keeps getting intense day by day. This step-ladder fever pattern that enteric fever is distinguished by results in the gradual development of symptoms like headache, loss of appetite, weakness, abdominal pain, diarrhoea or constipation and rashes. The Widal test in Kanpur is usually recommended after one week of noticing the symptoms of an Enteric fever. If you test positive, you will be advised to undergo another test at an interval of 7 to 10 days to measure the rising titres of the antibodies.
