PSA, the prostate-specific antigen is a protein produced by the prostate gland. Prostate is a small gland located just below the bladder in males. PSA is produced by both of the non-cancerous and cancerous tissues of the prostate. PSA is mostly present in semen, which is also generated by the prostate gland. Small amounts of PSA are always normal in the blood of men, but high levels may indicate prostate problems.

A PSA test cannot give precise information about the condition of the prostate gland. Digital rectal examination (DRE), another common screening test is done along with PSA, to get an idea of whether the prostate has abnormal lumps or hard areas.

A high PSA level indicates the possibility of prostate cancer, but not always. PSA levels can also be elevated for other reasons, such as:

Someone may also need this screening if he:

• Has one first degree relative (such as his father or brother) who has had prostate cancer
• Has at least two extended family members who have had prostate cancer
