Prolactin is a hormone produced by the pituitary gland. This hormone is responsible for the growth of breasts and the production of milk during pregnancy and after birth in women. Prolactin hormone is naturally high for a pregnant woman and a nursing mother. Whereas it is low in women, not pregnant and in men.

A high level of prolactin often indicates a prolactinoma (tumour in the pituitary), which causes the pituitary gland to produce the hormone in excess. Too much prolactin in the blood is the reason for the production of breastmilk in women who are not pregnant or breastfeeding and in men.

In women, high levels of prolactin also cause menstrual problems and infertility.

In men, too much prolactin causes lower sex drive and impotence.
