Overview
Preventive health checkups through elderly care services play a crucial role in improving the quality of life of the elderly population. Ageing comes with its own set of challenges, including changes in muscle strength, bone and joint problems, changes in metabolism, changes in blood sugar and blood pressure regulation, and alterations in how medicines work, among others. Monitoring BP, blood sugar, pulse rate, and BMI regularly can help detect early warning signs and lower the risk of complications like stroke, cardiac arrest, kidney disease, and dementia.
Changes that appear gradually often go unnoticed, and checking vital parameters and understanding their complaints can become challenging for children living away from their parents. To address this issue, PharmEasy has introduced Elder Care with ECG & Lab tests, a home visit service as part of elder care, which can be booked from anywhere for your parents. A trained specialist will visit them, record their vitals, perform ECG at home, collect a sample for basic lab tests, and send a detailed health summary to the caregiver.
PharmEasy’s Elder Care with ECG & Lab tests ensures that your parents receive safe, regular health monitoring in the comfort of their home, while keeping you connected through digital updates. With trained Health Experts, bedside ECG at home, AI-powered summaries, and online doctor consultations, everyday senior citizen care is made simpler, smarter, and safer.
Risk Assessment
The combination of regular vitals and routine ECG screenings as part of senior citizen care service can significantly improve early detection of:
- Arrhythmias and abnormal heart rhythms: As the heart ages, irregular rhythms such as atrial fibrillation can occur without noticeable symptoms and are often detected during routine ECG testing. People at risk of blockages due to obesity, deranged blood fats, etc., can also get a screening by ECG. Elders with pre-existing heart conditions, pacemakers, and other similar conditions are advised to undergo routine ECG monitoring to assess heart function and rhythm.
- Blood Pressure (BP): Both high and low BP can be dangerous for elders. Fluctuations in blood pressure increase the risk of falls, cognitive changes, stroke, heart disease, eye disease, kidney diseases and more.
- Blood Sugar (Random or Fasting as needed): Very high or very low blood sugar can affect all the vital organs of the body, increasing the risk of heart diseases, diabetic eye disease, kidney disease, and more. A drop in blood sugar (hypoglycemia) can be a cause of falls and life-threatening complications if not managed on time.
- SPO2 (Oxygen Saturation): Suggests respiratory problems. The target levels of SPO2 may vary in some patients with pre-existing respiratory illnesses, such as COPD or lung fibrosis.
- Pulse Rate: Both high and low pulse rates can indicate a risk of heart disease. A drop in pulse rate is a warning sign that often goes overlooked before a cardiac arrest.
- Body Temperature: Many infections and chronic conditions present with fever. Mild fever may not be obvious unless recorded by a thermometer.
- Height, Weight, and BMI: Basic parameters that should be recorded regularly for everyone, especially the elderly population. These insights can help your doctor assess various systemic conditions and modify the diet and medication dosages accordingly.
- HbA1c: Gives an estimate of average blood sugar levels over the past 2-3 months. Helps monitor the blood sugar control and effectiveness of diabetes medications, dietary modifications, etc.
- CBC: Complete blood count includes multiple parameters like white blood cells, RBCs, platelets, and more, which indicate infections, allergies, bleeding risks, hemoglobin levels, bone marrow, and kidney problems.
- Kidney Function Test: Gives an overview of kidney function, which is a crucial parameter to be monitored in elders with diabetes or high BP.
- Vitamin D and B12: Deficiency of these vitamins is very common in elders and leads to increased risk of cognitive decline, nerve pain, body aches, bone and joint problems, and even depression.
You may also avail a free online consultation with a doctor through this service, which can help them review ongoing medications and manage any new complaints. This service provides families with timely alerts, enabling them to respond more quickly and deliver better care to their elderly relatives at home.
