Doctor Cracks the Misconceptions Around the Bone Smashing Trend

By Dr. Nikita Toshi +2 more

Introduction:

The risky trend of “bone smashing” is becoming popular among young people. In today’s digital era, many individuals are trying dangerous methods in their quest for beauty and perfection. In this blog, Dr. Nikita Toshi will talk about bone smashing. Additionally, she’ll discuss safer and more medically sound options like orthognathic surgeries and orthodontic appliances for correcting skeletal deformities.

What is Bone Smashing?

Bone smashing is gaining popularity and involves hitting your facial bones with a hammer, bottle, or other hard objects to reshape and enhance your facial features. The idea is to induce bone reshaping and strength which is medically unsafe if done in this way.

Understanding the science behind bone remodeling-

The process of restructuring the bone cells of the skeleton is called bone remodeling. It is a physiological process that serves to maintain the strength and stability of the skeletal system while also playing a role in the body’s regulation of calcium and phosphorus levels. Bone remodeling involves removing old or damaged bone (resorption) and then adding new bone material (deposition).

When pressure (within physiological limit) is applied to the bone for a set time period the bone cells on the side under pressure tend to resorb (osteoclastic activity) and new bone cells on the opposite side tend to form (osteoblastic activity). This concept is used by doctors who apply a calculated amount of pressure for a calculated amount of time on specific areas of bone with the help of facial appliances to achieve the desired results gradually over a period of time.

Contrary to this, Bone smashing involves the application of high-grade pressure in a jerk which is extremely risky, and doctors warn not to try it. While the allure of these procedures is understandable, it’s crucial to understand the drawbacks and potential risks associated with bone-smashing

Drawbacks and Risks of Bone Smashing:

1. Health Risks: Bone smashing carries inherent health risks, including infection, bone fractures, soft tissue injuries, scarring, excessive bleeding, and nerve damage leading to permanent loss of sensation in that region. Facial skeletal damage may also affect the health of sinuses, eyes, brain, and teeth and affect the functioning of these organs.

2. Long-Term Damage: Altering the natural structure of bones can lead to irreversible damage to bones and underlying structures, affecting both function and aesthetics.

3. Uneven Results: Achieving symmetrical and desired results with bone smashing is challenging, and there’s a very high risk of ending up with uneven facial features.

4. Post-Procedure Pain and Recovery: Bone smashing involves a painful recovery period, and the discomfort can last for an extended period, affecting daily life.

Doctor-Recommended Alternatives to Bone Smashing

If you have a skeletal (bony) deformity or want to change any facial features, it’s crucial to consult a plastic surgeon or orthodontic experts for a safe and appropriate treatment plan.

Fortunately, there are safer and more effective alternatives to bone smashing for correcting skeletal deformities and achieving desired facial features-

1. Orthognathic Surgeries:

Orthognathic surgeries involve carefully planned and precise procedures to correct jaw and facial abnormalities. These surgeries are performed by experienced oral and maxillofacial surgeons, ensuring safety and long-term positive outcomes.

2. Orthodontic Appliances:

Orthodontic appliances, like chin cups, head gears and other extraoral appliances may be effective tools for correcting facial bone deformities to some extent. These work by growth modifications in children. Orthodontists use these appliances to gradually shift teeth and align the jaw, improving both function and appearance.

3. Cosmetic Procedures

Seek consultation from a cosmetology expert who can advise safe procedures to enhance facial features.

An orthodontist/ oral and maxillofacial surgeon/ plastic surgeon can assess your unique situation and recommend the most appropriate treatment plan. They will consider your medical history, facial structure, and overall health to determine the best approach.

In a Nutshell:

While the idea of bone smashing may sound tempting, it’s essential to be aware of potential risks and prioritise your health and safety above all else. Opting for safer alternatives like orthognathic surgeries and orthodontic appliances can help correct skeletal deformities effectively and with minimal risk of serious complications unlike bone smashing. Always consult with a qualified healthcare professional before making any decisions regarding altering your bones for aesthetic purposes. Your health and well-being should always be the top priority.
