There is one death every four minutes due to road accidents in India. At least sixteen children die on roads each day due to drunk driving and road accidents. The survivors, victims and the lucky rest all have one thing in common- lack of awareness about what to do while encountering a road accident. When you are living in a country which has such a high scale of road accidents every day, it is better to be precautious than sorry.
Here is a set of guidelines that need to be followed if you are in or spot road accidents:
Assess the scene
Before assessing property, prioritize on how the individuals involved are doing. As soon as there is a road accident and it involves you, do not leave the scene or move without careful assessment of what happened. The shock may be overwhelming but it is important to think with a clear mind, especially if the other person has sustained major injuries or is dead. There could be legal attributes attached to such road accidents and every move will be noted and counted during such times.
Call the ambulance/ Police
After careful assessment and observation of the road accident, call an ambulance in the case of injuries being severe and requires immediate medical help. You should also call the police if there is significant property damage and physical injury. A police report should be filed in such situations and obtain the name and badge number of the officer in charge.
Move to safety
If it is safe to do so, move your vehicle to the side of the road away from the traffic. If your vehicle is heavily damaged by the road accident and cannot be driven, turn on your hazard lights or make sure a barrier is put around your vehicle by the officer to indicate damage and seclusion. If you have access to a camera or a smartphone, take pictures of the scene of a road accident; preferably before the vehicles are moved.
Road accidents have a lot of legal liabilities. Hence, it is important to give and take down information. Get the names, numbers, addresses, driver’s license numbers, license plate numbers and basic insurance information from the drivers involved. For the passengers, obtain their names, numbers and addresses. Be patient and cooperative and never show guilt involuntarily or unnecessarily, it can cost heavy for you, especially when innocent.
Inform insurance company
Be truthful and state facts about the road accident to your insurance company. Show them a copy of the police complaint and where the faults are. If the insurance company finds some fault, then you are in for some serious trouble.
The Other Dos and Don’ts
It is important to stay calm in case of road accidents. Rash decisions and impulsive moves can go against you. Do not argue or justify yourself to anyone, wait for the police to arrive and tell your story. Do not voluntarily take responsibility for the accident, wait for the legal procedures to assess and inform about the scene.
These protocols should be followed for any kind of road accident. Be road safe. Be aware. Be a better citizen!
