Freezing watermelon is quite easy, and there are a few different ways to do it based on how you want to use it later. So, let’s talk about how to freeze watermelon slices, cubes, puree, and even rind. 

Watermelon Prep 

Before you freeze your watermelon, remember to: 

  • Pick a fresh and ripe one with no damage 
  • Clear away the rind and seeds 
  • Decide which part is the best for you (slices, cubes, puree, or rind) 
     

1. Freezing Watermelon Slices 

  1. Slice up seedless watermelon in 1-inch-thick pieces. 
  2. Put the slices on a baking tray covered with parchment paper. Make sure they aren’t touching. 
  3. Put the tray in the freezer for 3-4 hours till the slices are frozen. 
  4. Move the frozen slices to airtight jars or resealable freezer bags. Make sure there’s as little air inside as possible. 
  5. Write the date on the containers or bags, then keep them in the freezer. They’ll stay good for up to 8 months. 

2. Freezing Watermelon Cubes 

  1. Chop the seedless watermelon into 1-inch cubes. 
  2. Put the cubes on a baking tray lined with parchment paper. Leave space between each piece. 
  3. Freeze the watermelon cubes for 3-4 hours till they’re solid. 
  4. Move the frozen cubes into airtight jars or resealable freezer bags.

3. Freezing Watermelon Puree 

  1. Pull the seeds out of the watermelon and cut it into chunks. 
  2. Blend the watermelon pieces till it’s a smooth mix. 
  3. Pour the mix into ice cube trays and put in the freezer for 3-4 hours till solid. 
  4. Move the frozen watermelon cubes into airtight jars or resealable freezer bags. 
  5. Label and store the jars in the freezer for up to 8 months. 

4. Freezing Watermelon Rind 

  1. Cut away the green skin from the white meat of the watermelon. 
  2. Chop the white meat into 1-inch strips or cubes. 
  3. Put the pieces on a baking tray lined with parchment paper. Leave space between each one. 
  4. Freeze the pieces for 3-4 hours till they’re solid. 
  5. Move the frozen rind into airtight jars or resealable freezer bags. 
  6. Label and store the jars in the freezer for up to 8 months.
