  • Other blood tests: Measure hormone levels such as oestrogen, progesterone, testosterone, follicle-stimulating hormone, luteinising hormone, thyroid hormones, prolactin, cortisol, or insulin2,19. Some hormone tests may need to be done on specific days of the menstrual cycle. 
  • Pelvic ultrasound: Helps evaluate the ovaries and uterus and can identify conditions such as PCOS1
  • Imaging tests: MRI or CT scans may be recommended if a pituitary or adrenal gland disorder is suspected20
  • Additional tests: Depending on the suspected cause, your doctor may recommend blood sugar tests, lipid profile, or other investigations to assess your overall health. 

Note: Hormone tests are not routinely recommended for every woman with suspected hormonal imbalance. Your doctor will order specific hormone tests based on your symptoms, medical history, physical examination, and suspected underlying condition. 

Treatment of Hormonal Imbalance in Women

Treatment for hormonal imbalance in women depends on the underlying cause, the hormones involved, your age, symptoms, and whether you are planning a pregnancy. In many cases, treating the underlying condition can help restore hormone balance and improve symptoms. Common management options include: 

  • Hormonal medications: Depending on the condition, your doctor may prescribe birth control pills, hormone replacement therapy, progesterone, or other hormone-based options to regulate hormone levels4,5
  • Medicines for underlying conditions: Medications may be used to address disorders such as hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, diabetes, insulin resistance, or PCOS1,2
  • Fertility treatments: Women who have difficulty conceiving due to hormonal problems may benefit from medicines that stimulate ovulation or other fertility treatments recommended by a specialist6

  • Manage long-term health conditions: Follow your treatment plan if you have conditions such as diabetes, thyroid disease, or PCOS, as good disease control supports hormonal health. 
  • Avoid unnecessary use of hormonal medicines: Take hormone-based medications, including contraceptives and supplements, only as prescribed by your doctor.
