Hair problems are universal! Maintaining hair health requires a lot of time and patience. Everyone has a different set of hair issues such as hair fall, hair thinning, dandruff, greying of hair, and a lot of other issues. If you want healthy hair, care should be taken regularly to avoid scalp and hair problems. And for you to take proper care of your hair, you should first know some basics about hair.
Hair is made up of protein, keratin1, and sulphur to make it stronger by keeping the hair strands intact to their roots. When there are some deficiencies in proteins, and some vitamins or minerals, your hair may show it in the form of hair fall, thinning etc2. Using various oils, shampoos, and gels can’t always be a solution for your hair problems; sometimes simple home remedies like onion juice can be effective.

Yes! Onion can be an effective home remedy for your hair problems. You may not like the strong, pungent smell of onion but eating and applying onion topically can be magical. Onion juice is known to be a very helpful approach for hair loss and other hair problems for ages. Onion has many anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial chemicals that help improve your hair health3. In this article, we will show you why and how to try onion juice to get perfect hair.
Onion juice is full of compounds that can fight against bacteria and fungus and keep your hair healthy and shiny. Here are some reasons for its effectiveness:
As the saying goes, for those experiencing persistent hair loss or patches of bald spots, it is essential to seek the expertise of a dermatologist early on to receive proper treatment. It is crucial to keep in mind that hair loss can stem from various factors, such as infections, autoimmune disorders, and more, all of which necessitate the intervention of a qualified dermatologist.

Take one onion and chop it into small pieces. Blend these chopped onions and make a smooth paste of them. Now filter the paste by using a soft cotton cloth so there are no onion chunks left in the juice6.
Take a cotton pad and soak it in onion juice. With this pad, apply the juice over the entire scalp. Once you have covered the entire scalp, massage your scalp with your fingers for a few minutes. Then leave the juice over the scalp and hair for an hour and then rinse it off with cold or lukewarm water by using a mild shampoo. You can use this approach thrice a week for better results.
Apart from cooking, onion has many benefits, from hair to heart. It magically acts on hair to keep them nourished. Here are some major benefits of onion juice on hair that are as follows:

Onion juice can help in preventing hair fall due to the presence of sulphur in it. It is a chief component to make your hair strong. Sulphur may help to promote keratin production that can help maintain overall hair health by promoting hair growth and keeping the hair soft, supple and clean4. It is also believed that onion juice massage can increase the blood circulation of the scalp which improves hair growth3.

Onion juice contains antioxidants such as catalase that help to keep your hair black. Accumulation of hydrogen peroxide at the root of the hair can cause greying of hair by reducing the level of catalase. Hence, by applying onion juice, you might be able to manage or restrict the greying of hair due to its rich antioxidant content5,7.

Due to the presence of various micronutrients in onion juice, it nourishes your dry, brittle hair. It contains sulphur, flavonoids, antioxidants, and anti-inflammatory properties which increase the blood supply of hair roots, thereby promoting hair health. Its zinc content can aid production of oil on scalp, thus keeping your scalp and hair moisturised3.

Dandruff is a common and annoying problem. Dandruff can be due to a fungal infection which is sometimes co-related with a bacterial infection8. Dandruff can cause your scalp skin to be dry and itchy. Onion juice possesses anti-fungal and anti-microbial properties that can help to get rid of dandruff. 5

Anti-inflammatory properties of onion juice can soothe a dry and itchy scalp. It also increases the blood supply to the skin, which helps to moisturise the scalp3,5.
Although initial studies have shown potential hair health benefits of onion juice, further large-scale human studies are needed to confirm these findings. Nonetheless, onion juice can a natural remedy worth trying for improving your hair health. However, if you have skin issues like psoriasis, eczema etc, it’s ideal to discuss with a dermatologist before using any natural product on skin or scalp including onion juice.

While generally safe otherwise, onion juice applied to the scalp may cause mild erythema and contact dermatitis, particularly in individuals with a sensitive skin6,7. It is always better to do a patch test before use. If you notice any skin irritation, redness or swelling, then do not use this home remedy.
