Introduction

Pathimugam water is a traditional herbal drink made by soaking or boiling the heartwood of the Pathimugam tree (Caesalpinia sappan), commonly known as Sappanwood. The wood naturally gives the water a light pink to reddish colour and has been used for generations in traditional wellness practices1,2

Pathimugam is known by different names across India, including Sappanwood in English, Pathimukham in Malayalam, Pautngam in Tamil, and Patangah in Sanskrit1. It is especially popular in Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and other parts of South India, where it is commonly consumed as a refreshing herbal drink1.

Pathimugam Water (Sappanwood)

In this article, we will explore the nutritional value of Pathimugam water, its potential health benefits, traditional and modern uses, possible side effects, methods of preparation and consumption, recommended precautions, dosage, and potential interactions.

What is Pathimugam Water (Sappanwood)?

Pathimugam water is a herbal drink prepared by soaking or boiling in water small pieces of the heartwood of the Pathimugam tree. As the wood steeps, it releases natural compounds that turn the water a light pink to reddish colour.

Pathimugam water has been a part of traditional Ayurvedic practices, particularly in Southeast and South Asia3. Owing to its pleasant taste, it is commonly consumed as a refreshing daily beverage and has traditionally been used to improve the quality of drinking water. Besides its distinctive colour, the wood contains several naturally occurring plant compounds, including flavonoids, polyphenols, and brazilin, which are believed to contribute to its potential health benefits3. While laboratory and animal studies have shown promising effects, more high-quality human studies are needed to confirm many of its traditional health claims.

Nutritional Value of Pathimugam Water

Although Pathimugam water for weight loss is a popular topic, this is currently supported only by anecdotal evidence, and it is yet to be demonstrated via clinical trials that Pathimugam water directly promotes weight loss or burns fat.

Some of the key bioactive compounds found in Pathimugam include Brazilin, xanthones, coumarins, chalcones, flavones, and homoisoflavonoids1,4. Brazilin, the primary bioactive compound in sappanwood, is responsible for its characteristic pink to reddish colour.

Compound Potential Role
Brazilin The primary bioactive compound in sappanwood, responsible for its characteristic pink to reddish colour.
Xanthones Plant compounds known for their antioxidant properties.
Coumarins Naturally occurring aromatic compounds found in many medicinal plants.
Chalcones A class of plant polyphenols that belong to the flavonoid family.
Flavones Naturally occurring flavonoids commonly found in fruits, vegetables, and medicinal plants.
Homoisoflavonoids Rare plant compounds found in high amounts in C. sappan

Note: The concentration of these compounds in Pathimugam water depends on factors such as the quality of the heartwood, the amount used, and the preparation method.

Benefits of Pathimugam Water

Traditionally, Pathimugam water has been used as a herbal beverage for its several potential benefits as follows:

1. Reduction in Oxidative Stress

antioxidants

The abundant natural antioxidants help protect the body’s cells from damage caused by harmful molecules called free radicals3,5

2. Reduction in Inflammation and Pain Relief

reduces inflammation

The natural components of Pathimugam may help reduce inflammation and also provide relief from mild pain, but more research in humans is needed.

3. Antibacterial Effects

Laboratory studies have shown that Pathimugam may help slow the growth of certain bacteria, including those linked to dental plaque and some infections. However, it should not be used as a replacement for antibiotics prescribed by your doctor1,3.

4. Support Skin Health

The antioxidants in Pathimugam may help protect the skin from damage caused by sun exposure, which can lead to free radical formation in skin cells. Some laboratory studies also suggest it may help reduce acne-causing bacteria and skin inflammation, but more human studies are needed to confirm these Pathimugam water benefits1,3.

5. Liver Protection

Some animal studies suggest that Pathimugam may help protect the liver from damage. However, there is currently not enough evidence to confirm this benefit in humans1.

6. Support Blood Sugar Management

Early research suggests that Pathimugam may help maintain healthy blood sugar levels3. However, there is not enough evidence to recommend it as a treatment for diabetes.

7. Support Blood Pressure Management

The natural compounds in Pathimugam may help relax blood vessels and maintain normal blood pressure4,6,7. However, more human studies are needed to confirm this benefit.

8. Other Potential Pathimugam Water Health Benefits

Pathimugam Water

Ongoing research focuses on its possible antiviral, antimalarial, antidiarrhoeal, and other health-promoting properties. While the early findings are encouraging, these Pathimugam water uses have not yet been clinically established in humans3,8,9,10

Important: Although current research supports several potential Pathimugam water uses, consumption of Pathimugam water should only be as part of a healthy lifestyle and not as a replacement for medical treatment. More research is needed to establish the appropriate dosage, frequency, and long-term safety of Pathimugam water consumption.

Side Effects of Pathimugam Water

Pathimugam water is generally considered safe when consumed in moderation. However, excessive intake may lead to mild Pathimugam water side effects in some individuals. These may include6:

  • Dizziness or light-headedness, particularly in individuals with low blood pressure.
  • Stomach discomfort or digestive upset in sensitive individuals.
  • Allergic reactions are rare but may occur in individuals who are sensitive to the plant.

In case of any unusual symptoms or Pathimugam water side effects after consumption, it is important to stop using it and consult a doctor.

How to Make Pathimugam Water?

How To Make Pathimugam Water

Pathimugam water is traditionally prepared using the heartwood of the Pathimugam tree. The wood is available as small chips or shavings.

To prepare Pathimugam water6:

  • Take 5 to 10 g of Pathimugam wood chips.
  • Add them to 300 to 500 mL of water.
  • Bring the water to a boil and simmer for 10 to 20 minutes, or until it turns a pinkish red to deep reddish colour.
  • Strain the water and allow it to cool slightly.
  • Enjoy it warm or at room temperature.

Note: The same wood chips can usually be boiled one more time to extract the remaining natural compounds.

How to Use Pathimugam Water?

Pathimugam water is traditionally consumed as a herbal beverage and is often included as part of a healthy lifestyle.

  • Drink 1 to 2 cups daily, unless otherwise advised by a doctor.
  • It can be consumed warm or at room temperature.
  • It may be enjoyed on its own or flavoured with herbs such as ginger, cinnamon, or lemongrass for added taste6.

Precautions to Take with Pathimugam Water

Although Pathimugam water is a traditional herbal drink, certain precautionary measures should be taken.

  • Always use genuine Pathimugam (sappanwood) from a trusted source to avoid contamination or adulteration.
  • People with naturally low blood pressure should consume it cautiously6.
  • There is limited information on its safety during pregnancy and lactation. So, pregnant or lactating women should consult their doctor before consuming it.
  • Excessive consumption is not recommended, as the long-term safety of consuming large amounts has not been established.

Interaction with Other Drugs

There is limited research on how Pathimugam water interacts with medications. However, because it may influence blood sugar and blood pressure, it should be used cautiously with:

  • Diabetes medications, as Pathimugam water may enhance their blood sugar-lowering effects.
  • Blood pressure medications, as Pathimugam water may further lower blood pressure in some individuals6.
  • Blood-thinning medications (anticoagulants or antiplatelet drugs), as the compounds in Pathimugam may affect blood clotting11.

Note: Individuals regularly taking prescription medications, other herbal supplements, or Ayurvedic remedies should consult their doctor before consuming Pathimugam water to help avoid potential interactions.

Dosage

There is no universally established dosage for Pathimugam water. The appropriate amount may vary depending on factors such as age, overall health, and the reason for using it.

  • As a general guideline for adults, 100 to 150 mL of freshly prepared Pathimugam decoction can be consumed once or twice daily, or as advised by a qualified doctor6.
