Pathimugam water is a traditional herbal drink made by soaking or boiling the heartwood of the Pathimugam tree (Caesalpinia sappan), commonly known as Sappanwood. The wood naturally gives the water a light pink to reddish colour and has been used for generations in traditional wellness practices1,2.
Pathimugam is known by different names across India, including Sappanwood in English, Pathimukham in Malayalam, Pautngam in Tamil, and Patangah in Sanskrit1. It is especially popular in Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and other parts of South India, where it is commonly consumed as a refreshing herbal drink1.
