7 Powerful Home Remedies for Acne!

By Dr. Raina N. Nahar +2 more

Introduction

Acne is a common skin problem that can be both frustrating and inconvenient. It often appears when it is least wanted, especially on the face.

Causes of Acne

Acne forms when pores become clogged with dirt, excess oil, and dead skin cells. The condition can be of various types and differs from person to person. Common types include whiteheads, blackheads, and pimples.

The factors affecting acne formation can differ depending on factors such as1:

  • Hormonal changes
  • Genetics
  • Diet
  • Air quality
  • Stress
  • Sleep
  • Water intake
  • Certain cosmetic products
  • Some medications
  • Many individuals spend significant amounts on acne treatments; however, some home remedies may offer support in managing mild symptoms. That said, it is important to consult a healthcare professional before starting any treatment and to avoid self-medicating2.

Home Remedies for Acne

1. Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree oil, known for its antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties, is commonly used in skincare for mild to moderate acne. When properly diluted, it may help reduce blemishes by targeting surface bacteria and soothing inflammation3. However, it can cause irritation or allergic reactions in some individuals. A patch test is recommended before use. Always consult a healthcare professional before starting any new treatment.

2. Aloe Vera

aloe vera

Aloe vera gel is widely recognised for its soothing, anti-inflammatory, and hydrating properties. To use it at home, cut a fresh aloe leaf, extract the gel, and apply it directly to the affected area. When used regularly, it may help calm irritated skin and support the management of acne-related inflammation4. Commercially available aloe vera gel for skincare can also be used, but it is advisable to choose products free from added fragrances or harsh ingredients. For ongoing or severe acne, consult a qualified healthcare professional.

3. Chamomile

chamomile

Chamomile is a well-regarded ingredient known for its anti-inflammatory and calming properties, which may help soothe irritated skin and manage acne5.  To use chamomile for acne, you can either blend the contents of a chamomile tea bag with a small amount of water to form a smooth paste and apply it directly to the affected areas, or steep one to two chamomile tea bags in two cups of hot water, allowing the mixture to cool before applying it to blemishes using a cotton pad. Including this step in your skincare routine may help reduce redness and inflammation, contributing to clearer, more comfortable skin. However, for persistent or severe acne, it is always advisable to seek professional medical advice for your skincare routine.

4. Echinacea

Echinacea is known for its antioxidant properties and may help in controlling acne, pimples, and other skin infections6. You can either use Echinacea tea as a regular face wash or apply a few drops of the tea on the affected areas with a soft cloth or cotton.

Apple cider vinegar (ACV) contains acetic acid, malic acid, and lactic acid, which are often used in skin care products; natural healers often suggest using ACV as a cystic acne treatment to help exfoliate dead skin and kill bacteria. However, using it in proper dilution is necessary.

5. Fullers Earth

Fuller’s Earth, a natural clay material, is traditionally used in skincare for its oil-absorbing and cooling properties. It may help manage oily skin and reduce the appearance of blemishes when applied as a face mask7.

Often combined with rose water or other gentle ingredients, it can support a clearer-looking complexion. However, it may cause dryness or irritation in sensitive skin types. A patch test is recommended prior to use.

For persistent or severe acne, professional medical advice should be taken.

6. Honey

Honey, with its antimicrobial properties, is a powerhouse of nutrients. Honey is also considered a beneficial natural remedy for acne and pimples. It is also a good natural contender in the treatment of acne and pimples8. Apply a generous amount of honey directly to the acne and allow it to dry. After about an hour, wash it off. The natural stickiness of honey helps draw out excess dirt and impurities from the pores, supporting clearer skin.

7. Mint

Mint helps to unclog the pores and may help reduce bacterial infections9. To support clear skin, mix two tablespoons of finely chopped fresh mint with two tablespoons each of yoghurt and oatmeal. Whisk into a smooth paste, apply to your face, and leave it to dry for about ten minutes and rinse off with cool water.

Although many people seek dermatological advice for acne primarily due to concerns about facial appearance, the most commonly prescribed treatments are topical medications applied directly to the skin. These treatments can often cause dryness and irritation as side effects. If symptoms worsen after starting treatment, consult your dermatologist if the symptoms worsen after starting the treatment.

Conclusion

Acne can be a challenging condition, but understanding its causes and exploring home remedies can help manage mild symptoms effectively. While various factors like hormones, genetics, and stress contribute to acne, natural treatments like tea tree oil, aloe vera, and honey may provide relief. However, it is crucial to consult a dermatologist before starting any new treatment, especially for persistent or severe cases, to ensure safe and appropriate care. With proper management and mindful skincare, acne can be controlled, allowing for clearer and healthier skin.
