Rybelsus (oral semaglutide): uses, dosage, side effects and price in India
Rybelsus is an oral GLP-1 medicine approved in India for the treatment of type 2 diabetes.It is a once-daily tablet made by Novo Nordisk and is being renamed as 'Ozempic tablets' globally (also by Novo Nordisk).1 This tablet is a prescription-only (Schedule H) medicine that is meant to be taken on an empty stomach. It comes in 3 mg, 7 mg and 14 mg strengths.
Rybelsus contains semaglutide, the same active molecule that Ozempic contains.3 Semaglutide is a peptide (a molecule your stomach acid normally breaks down). This is why, for years, it could only be given by injections (like Ozempic).
What makes Rybelsus different is that it pairs semaglutide with an absorption-enhancer technology that is meant to help a small amount of the medicine pass into the body from the stomach. This is also why it is important to take the tablet exactly as directed (more on that below).

How Rybelsus works
Semaglutide is a glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist. GLP-1 is a natural hormone released by the gut after you eat.3 Rybelsus mimics the action of this hormone by activating GLP-1 receptors and thereby producing certain effects that could help control blood sugar:
It stimulates the pancreas to release insulin when blood sugar levels are elevated, helping lower blood glucose while also reducing the risk of hypoglycaemia (low blood sugar).
It reduces the release of glucagon, a hormone that signals the liver to produce and release glucose.
It slows stomach emptying, allowing glucose from food to enter the bloodstream more gradually.
It acts on appetite centres in the brain, helping reduce hunger and increase feelings of fullness.
Together, these effects help improve blood sugar control (HbA1c) in adults with type 2 diabetes.
What Rybelsus is approved for in India
In India, Rybelsus is approved for the management of type 2 diabetes in adults. It is used alongside a healthy diet and regular exercise to improve blood sugar control. Your doctor will decide whether Rybelsus is appropriate for you and how it fits into your overall diabetes treatment plan.1,3
Is Rybelsus approved for weight management?
Although semaglutide can reduce appetite, Rybelsus is not approved in India for chronic weight management. It is strictly approved only for type 2 diabetes. The semaglutide medicine approved in India for chronic weight management is Wegovy, which is available as a higher-dose, once-weekly injection.1,2 So, using Rybelsus for weight management would be an off-label use. Taking Rybelsus correctly is essential for it to work effectively. Unlike most tablets, Rybelsus is absorbed only in small amounts, and the way you take it has a significant impact on how much of the medicine your body absorbs.3 So, following the recommended instructions helps ensure you receive the intended dose. Why are these instructions so important?
Rybelsus is absorbed through the stomach during a short absorption window. So, eating, drinking, or taking other medicines too soon (including drinking too much water) could reduce the amount of semaglutide your body absorbs. Therefore, following the empty stomach, a small amount of water, and a 30-minute waiting rule helps ensure the medicine works as intended.
Getting to the right dose (3 to 7 to 14 mg)
Rybelsus treatment begins with a low dose that is increased gradually to help reduce gastrointestinal side effects and allow your body to adjust to the medicine.3
Important: If you miss a dose, skip the missed tablet and take your next dose at the usual time the following morning, but never take two doses on the same day.

Like all medicines, Rybelsus may cause side effects, although not everyone might experience them. Most side effects affect the digestive system and are more common when you have just started taking the medicine or when the medication dose is increased.
